''The Call of the Blood'' (French: ''L'appel du sang'') is a 1920 French silent drama film directed by Louis Mercanton and starring Ivor Novello, Phyllis Neilson-Terry, and Charles Le Bargy. The film is most notable for giving a screen debut to the Welsh actor Novello, who went on to become a major star in the 1920s.Macbnab p.39 It is based on the 1906 novel of the same title by Robert Hichens. Pierre Alcover (14 March 1893 – 14 November 1957) was a French stage and film actor. He starred in 40 films between 1918 and 1943. In 1920 he starred in the film ''Champi-Tortu''. One of his most notable performances was in Marcel L'Herbier's 1928 film ''L'Argent (1928 film), L'Argent'', as the corrupt banker Saccard. He was the second husband of the film actress Gabrielle Colonna-Romano, and they are buried together in the cimetière de Rueil-Malmaison. Jacques De Baroncelli
Jacques de Baroncelli (25 June 1881 – 12 January 1951) was a French film director best known for his silent films from 1915 to the late 1930s. He came from a Florence, Florentine family who had settled in Provence in the 15th century, occupying a building in the centre of Avignon then called the Baroncelli Palace (now the Palais du Roure). His father's side of the family were of Tuscany, Tuscan origin and part of the Guelphs and Ghibellines, Ghibelline tradition, and they were hereditary Marquis of Javon, Marquises of Javon. Though somewhat aristocratic, the family spoke Provençal (dialect), Provençal, which was rather controversial at a time when it was considered to be a language of the common people. His older brother was Folco de Baroncelli-Javon, He directed well over 80 films between 1915 and 1948 and in the 1940s released numerous films in the United States and Italy. Paul Capellani
Paul Capellani (September 9, 1877 – November 7, 1960) was a noted French silent film actor. His brother was the director Albert Capellani and his uncle the film director Roger Capellani who died May 1940 at the Battle of Dunkirk. He starred in some 100 films between 1908 and 1930. Suzanne Desprès
Suzanne Desprès (16 December 1875 – 1 July 1951) was a French actress who was born at Verdun, Meuse and trained at the Paris Conservatoire, where in 1897 she obtained the first prize for comedy, and the second for tragedy. She then became associated with, and subsequently married, Lugné-Poe, the actor-manager, who had founded a new school of modern drama at the Théâtre de l'Œuvre. She achieved marked success in several of his plays there. In succeeding years she played at the Gymnase and at the Porte Saint-Martin, and in 1902 made her debut at the Comédie-Française, appearing in ''Phèdre'' and other important parts. Marcel L'Herbier (; 23 April 1888 – 26 November 1979) was a French filmmaker who achieved prominence as an avant-garde theorist and imaginative practitioner with a series of silent films in the 1920s. His career as a director continued until the 1950s and he made more than 40 feature films in total. During the 1950s and 1960s, he worked on cultural programmes for French television. He also fulfilled many administrative roles in the French film industry, and he was the founder and the first President of the French film school Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC). ''Le Carnaval des vérités'' is a 1920 French silent film written and directed by Marcel L'Herbier. Background After completing a commercial film for Léon Gaumont, Marcel L'Herbier was offered a contract to work on a prestigious series of films which would be known as "Gaumont Série Pax". Although the terms of the contract placed unwelcome restrictions upon his control over his work, L'Herbier realised that it also offered him an unparalleled opportunity to benefit from the international links of the Gaumont company and to work in the best technical facilities then available. His first project, which he was both to write and to direct, was ''Le Carnaval des vérités'', a symbolist drama about the struggle between Truth and Falsehood.
