Fremantle Chamber Of Commerce
The Fremantle Chamber of Commerce is a business and commerce advocacy association in Fremantle, Western Australia. History In 1853 the Western Australian Chamber of Commerce was founded. In 1873 the Chamber of Commerce requested and was granted land by the State Government land upon which to develop a headquarters. The name of the Chamber was altered to the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce. The first meeting of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce was held on 29 May 1873 at Maloney's Hotel, with Mr. William Dalgety Moore serving as its first chairman (although the Chamber's own information disagrees with this, and suggests that it was William Marmion). Nothing was done with the Chamber's landholdings until the block was exchanged for a site on Phillimore Street, adjacent to the Fremantle Fire Station, which had become free when the railway yards moved to Midland. ''The Western Mail'', or ''Western Mail'', was the name of two weekly newspapers published in Perth, Western Australia. Published 1885–1955 The first ''Western Mail'' was published on 19 December 1885 by Charles Harper and John Winthrop Hackett, co-owners of ''The West Australian'', the state's major daily paper. It was printed by James Gibney at the paper's office in St Georges Terrace. In 1901, in the publication ''Twentieth century impressions of Western Australia'', a history of the early days of the ''West Australian'' and the ''Western Mail'' was published. In the 1920s ''The West Australian'' employed its first permanent photographer Fred Flood, many of whose photographs were featured in the ''Western Mail''. Barrington Wood
Barrington Clarke Wood (9 May 1850 – 24 August 1903) was an Australian businessman and politician who served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia. A minister in the governments of Sir John Forrest and George Throssell, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1894 to 1901, and then a member of the Legislative Council from 1902 until his death. Wood was born in Fremantle, Western Australia, to Ellen (née Woodward) and George Wood. His father died when he was young, and his mother remarried in 1863 to Edward Newman, who was later elected to the Legislative Council. A merchant, Wood was elected to the Fremantle Town Council in 1875, and later served as Mayor of Fremantle from 1883 to 1885. Elias Solomon
Elias Solomon (2 September 1839 – 23 May 1909) was an Australian politician based in Fremantle. He was Mayor of Fremantle, MLA for South Fremantle, and the first Member for Fremantle in the Australian House of Representatives. Early life Solomon was born in London, England to Leah and Moss Solomon and migrated to Australia as a child, living at first in Sydney and then Adelaide. His uncle Emanuel Solomon owned the Queen's Theatre in Adelaide, and Solomon's father Moss was for a short while made manager. The family returned to Sydney until Moss' death in 1849 when Leah again moved to Adelaide and Solomon was educated at Adelaide Educational Institution. Career After finishing school, Solomon joined another of his uncle's business concerns and in 1857 was sent to Mauritius to purchase goods. Lionel Samson
Lionel Samson (1799-15 March 1878) was an early Swan River Colony settler and businessman whose firm, Lionel Samson & Son, is the second oldest continuing family business in Australia. It is likely his father was Michael Samson, "a member of one of the old established and wealthy families of English Jewry", according to the Australian Dictionary of Biography. After studying at Oxford University and being a member of the London Stock Exchange he emigrated to Western Australia. Samson arrived at Fremantle in 1829 on the '' Calista'' and soon set up business as a wine and spirit merchant, importer, and auctioneer. He also engaged in whaling. He purchased Fremantle town lots 27 and 28 in the first state land sale. He was postmaster-general from 1830 to 1832. In 1835 he obtained the state's first liquor license. William Silas Pearse
William Silas Pearse (21 May 1838 – 30 December 1908) was an Australian businessman, pastoralist, and politician who served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia. He was a member of the Legislative Council from 1872 to 1880 and again from 1884 to 1890, and then a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1890 to 1895. Early life Pearse was born in Fremantle to Susannah (née Glyde) and William Silas Pearse Sr., his parents both being early arrivals to the Swan River Colony. After being educated privately, he went into partnership with his brother (George Pearse), opening a butchery and tannery in Fremantle. They later diversified the business into ship-owning and importing. In 1866, Pearse was elected to the Fremantle Town Trust. He was re-elected in 1868, and appointed chairman. Mary Higham
Mary Higham (1819–1883) was a merchant in Fremantle, Australia, and a founding member of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce. She founded ''M. Higham and Sons'', a clothing and furniture emporium. Life Higham had lived in Northamptonshire or Oxfordshire before she arrived with her husband John and two children in Western Australia aboard the ''Sabrina'' in 1853 with 300 other passengers. By 1855, she had six children. Their income was from a confectionery and bakery business. Following the death of her husband at the age of 40 in 1858, Higham took over the family business, and with the aid of her teenage son Edward established a substantial enterprise ''M. Higham and Sons'', dealing in a variety of goods such as clothing, furnishing and tents. She ran this emporium in addition to the bakery cum sweet shop that her husband had established. Edward Higham
Edward Henry Higham (26 July 1846 – 20 April 1885) was a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1880 to 1884. Life The son of a baker, Edward Higham was born in Brackley, Northamptonshire, England (one source says Oxfordshire) on 26 July 1846. In 1853 his family emigrated to Western Australia, settling in Fremantle and opening a bakery and confectionery shop. After the death of his father, Higham left school in 1859 to help his mother, Mary Higham run the shop. By 1870 his mother had created a second business ''M. Higham and Sons'', selling clothing and furnishing and Edward became a partner in the firm. From 1870 on, Higham became increasingly involved in public life. Daniel Keen Congdon
Daniel Keen Congdon (August 1836 17 January 1907) was the mayor of the Municipality of Fremantle in Western Australia from 1886 to 1888. Biography Daniel Keen Congdon was born in August 1836 in Chatham, Kent to William John (18011865) and Sarah Ann née Scott (19061859). Congdon migrated to Western Australia with his parents from Kent in 1853. His father was a pharmacist and worked for the Western Australian Penal Department. On 22 December 1861 he married Jane Ainslie née Fairbairn. They had thirteen children (eight boys and five girls). In 1885 he was elected the mayor of the Municipality of Fremantle, a position in which he served for three years. He was re-elected as mayor in 1891. He was subsequently elected unanimously as the inaugural mayor of North Fremantle. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1892 to 1900. John Wesley Bateman
John Wesley Bateman (15 December 1824 – 15 April 1909) was a Fremantle, Western Australia merchant who was later President of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce Life The son of silk merchant John Bateman (Australian settler), John Bateman, John Wesley Bateman was born in London on 15 December 1824. In 1830 the Bateman family emigrated to Western Australia on board the ''Medina'', settling in Fremantle, where John Bateman Snr established himself as general store owner, whaler and postmaster. John Snr had three sons, Walter, John Wesley and Charles. Charles died in Indonesia on the way out to Australia. He also had six daughters.
