Freetown is the capital and largest city of Sierra Leone. It is a major port city on the Atlantic Ocean and is located in the Western Area of the country. Freetown is Sierra Leone's major urban, economic, financial, cultural, educational and political centre, as it is the seat of the Government of Sierra Leone. Freetown is an area in the Bahamas located on the island of Eleuthera. As of 2018, it had a population of about 100. It should not be confused with the Freetown parliamentary constituency on the island of New Providence, which saw 4,004 votes cast in the 2017 election. There is also an area on the island of Grand Bahama called Freetown. The area on Eleuthera is just east of the more populated town (or settlement) of Deep Creek. It is also 2 miles west of the settlement of Waterford. Freetown has no local government and thus would not be considered a settlement by Bahamas standards. This area is located on the southern (east-west) Deep Creek road at the intersection of Freetown Boulevard. At this corner is the Deep Creek Elementary. Up Freeton Blvd. to the north are a few homes and apartments. All public utilities are available in this area as well as cell phone coverage. Freetown is a former African American community near Gallion, in Hale County, Alabama, United States, in the so-called Canebrake region. Land and buildings formerly owned by a local slave-owning planter were left to both free and enslaved African Americans who had worked for him and lived with him, and the community lasted until the 1920s. A church built by that community in 1929 burned down in 2022. History The place was formed in 1867 by a group of African American men and women, some formerly enslaved, others free. They built their community on over of land left to them by the local planter John Collins. Originally a man of modest means, Collins had migrated to Alabama from Virginia, in 1837, where he became an overseer for Henry Augustine Tayloe, a wealthy slaveholding planter and horse breeder. Atholton is an unincorporated community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. A postal office operated from May 26, 1897, to November 1900 and again from 1903 to July 1917. Atholton was founded at the crossroads of Old Columbia Pike, Guilford Road and Clarksville Pike. Atholton takes its name from a land grant named "Athole" granted from King Charles to James Macgill 17 August 1732. He built a nearby manor house named "Athol" built between 1732 and 1740. In 1845, Nicolas Worthington freed seventeen of his slaves, and gave them of the "Athol enlarged" land which was then called "Freetown". In 1869, the Atholton Colored Church was founded and renamed to the Locust Chapel (Locust United Methodist) between 1871 and 1876. Freetown is a town in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,206 at the 2020 census. Freetown is one of the oldest communities in the United States, having been settled by the Pilgrims and their descendants in the latter half of the 17th century. Freetown station is a future MBTA Commuter Rail station located in the Assonet, Massachusetts, Assonet village of Freetown, Massachusetts. It is planned to open in May 2025 as part of the first phase of the South Coast Rail project. The station will have a single side platform on the west side of the Fall River Secondary, along with a park and ride lot. The Fall River Railroad (1846), Fall River Railroad opened through Freetown in 1845. Two stations on the line in Freetown were open until the 1930s. Freetown was announced as a potential South Coast Rail station in 2009. The planned station site was relocated slightly to the northeast in 2018. Freetown is a town in Cortland County, New York, United States. The population was 757 at the 2010 census. Freetown is in the southeastern part of the county and is southeast of Cortland. History Freetown was in the former Central New York Military Tract within a tract township called "Cincinnatus". The region was first settled ''circa'' 1800. Freetown was formed from part of the town of Cincinnatus in 1818. In 1820, the town was increased in size by an addition from the town of Virgil. Freetown is an area in East Hampton (town), New York originally inhabited by freed slaves and Native Americans. East Hampton in the early 19th century was lightly populated and one of the biggest slave holders were descendants of Lion Gardiner who owned Gardiner's Island. During the War of 1812 slaves from the island were used to ferry supplies back and forth because they could slip through British lines because it was "obvious" that they were "owned." After slavery was abolished in New York State in 1827, freed slaves were relocated to small houses just north of East Hampton (village), New York.
