Free-viewpoint Television
Free viewpoint television (FTV) is a system for viewing natural video, allowing the user to interactively control the viewpoint and generate new views of a dynamic scene from any 3D position. The equivalent system for computer-simulated video is known as virtual reality. With FTV, the focus of attention can be controlled by the viewers rather than a director, meaning that each viewer may be observing a unique viewpoint. It remains to be seen how FTV will affect television watching as a group activity. History Systems for rendering arbitrary views of natural scenes have been well known in the computer vision community for a long time but only in recent years has the speed and quality reached levels that are suitable for serious consideration as an end-user system. View Synthesis
View synthesis aims to create new views of a specific subject starting from a number of pictures taken from given point of views. Currently a study branch of Computer Science Research, Vision Research and Artificial Intelligence fields are involved in the definition of suitable approaches to the problem. See Computer Vision Example problem 1: Is to take a number of images of a specific subject, taken from a specific point with a specific camera orientation and setting, and then use that data to build a synthetic image that looks as if it was taken from a virtual camera that is placed at a different point and with the same settings. Rendering or image synthesis is the process of generating a photorealistic or non-photorealistic image from a 2D or 3D model by means of a computer program. The resulting image is referred to as the render. Multiple models can be defined in a ''scene file'' containing objects in a strictly defined language or data structure. An area of computer vision is active vision, sometimes also called active computer vision. An active vision system is one that can manipulate the viewpoint of the camera(s) in order to investigate the environment and get better information from it. Background The interest in active camera system started as early as two decades ago. Beginning in the late 1980s, Aloimonos et al. introduced the first general framework for active vision in order to improve the perceptual quality of tracking results. Active vision is particularly important to cope with problems like occlusions, limited field of view and limited resolution of the camera.
