Fredric R. Mann
Fredric R. Mann (September 13, 1903 – February 26, 1987) was an American industrialist and patron of the arts who helped finance music centers in Philadelphia and Tel Aviv. He was the first United States Ambassador to Barbados, serving from 1967 until 1969. In 1968, his portfolio expanded to being United States Special Representative to several Caribbean islands. He explained his philanthropy by saying: “The Hebrew word for charity is tzedakah, which really means justice. If you live opulently, you have to share with the less fortunate.” Career In his early 20s, Mann founded and directed the Seaboard Container Company which made cardboard boxes. It was known later as the National Container Corporation, and still later as Mann Kraft. As an arts patron, Mann arranged for Zubin Mehta's first conducting appearance in the United States at Robin Hood Dell in 1960. Heichal HaTarbut ( he, היכל התרבות), also known in English as the Culture Palace, officially the Charles Bronfman Auditorium, until 2013 the Fredric R. Mann Auditorium, is the largest concert hall in Tel Aviv, Israel, and home to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. History Heichal HaTarbut, originally named the Mann Auditorium, opened in 1957 at Habima Square. The building was designed by Dov Karmi, Zeev Rechter and Yaakov Rechter. The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (abbreviation IPO; Hebrew: התזמורת הפילהרמונית הישראלית, ''ha-Tizmoret ha-Filharmonit ha-Yisra'elit'') is an Israeli symphony orchestra based in Tel Aviv. Its principal concert venue is Heichal HaTarbut. History The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was founded as the Palestine Symphony Orchestra by violinist Bronisław Huberman in 1936, at a time of the dismissal of many Jewish musicians from European orchestras. Its inaugural concert took place in Tel Aviv on December 26, 1936, conducted by Arturo Toscanini. Its first principal conductor was William Steinberg.
