Frederick Wheeler (public Servant)
Sir Frederick Henry Wheeler (9 January 1914 – 5 August 1994) was a senior Australian public servant. He was Secretary of the Department of the Treasury from 1971 to 1979. Life and career Frederick Wheeler was born on 9 January 1914. He was educated at Trinity Grammar School and Scotch College in Melbourne. Wheeler began his Commonwealth public service career in 1939 in the Department of the Treasury. He rose to become Chairman of the Public Service Board, serving in the position for 10 years between 1961 and 1971. During his time at the Board, he reorganised its structure and put in a place a new, more professional qualification-based recruitment system. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in November 1971. Honours Wheeler was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1952, and a Commander of the Order (CBE) in 1962. Dick Randall
Sir Richard John Randall (13 October 1906 – 15 November 1982) was a senior Australian public servant. He was Secretary of the Department of the Treasury between October 1966 and October 1971. Life and career Dick Randall was born in Birkdale, Queensland on 13 October 1906. He attended Wynnum State High School. Randall joined the Commonwealth public service in 1940, taking up a post at the Department of the Treasury. The following year, on 27 May, he enlisted to the Australian Imperial Force, spending most of the war in Western Australia and demobilising in November 1945. After the war, Randall rejoined Treasury, and was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1966. He retired from his Secretary role in October 1971. Companions Of The Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is the only Australian order of chivalry. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, to recognise Australian citizens and other persons for achievement, meritorious service, or for both. At that time, Companion of the Order of Australia was the highest of three grades of the Order (Companion, Officer, Member). On 24 May 1976, the grade of Knight or Dame of the Order was established, displacing Companion as the highest grade. On 3 June 1986, the Knight/Dame grade was abolished, and Companion was once again the highest grade. On 25 March 2014, the Knight/Dame grade was re-established, Companion once again being relegated to the second highest grade of the Order. John Stone (Australian Politician)
John Owen Stone (born 31 January 1929) is a former Australian public servant and politician. He was Secretary to the Treasury between 1979 and 1984, and a senator for Queensland, representing the National Party, from 1987 to 1990. Early life Stone was born on 31 January 1929 in Perth, Western Australia. After gaining first class honours in mathematical physics for his bachelor of science degree and representing his state at hockey (under 21), he was selected as the Rhodes Scholar from Western Australia for 1951. At Oxford he was awarded first class honours in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) and won the James Webb Medley Prize for Economics. Sir Alan Sydenham Cooley, (17 September 1920 – 13 April 1997) was a senior Australian Public Service official and policymaker. Life and career Alan Cooley was born in 1920. He began his Commonwealth Public Service career in the Department of Supply, rising up the ranks to become Secretary of that department in 1966. He transferred the department headquarters to Canberra in January 1968. Between 1971 and 1977, Cooley was Chairman of the Public Service Board.
