Freddie A. Lerche
Freddie Alexander Lerche (born 2 October 1937) is a Danish painter. His use of colour is devoid of any specific function, providing his paintings with a deep, material character. In 2012, he was awarded the Thorvaldsen Medal. Biography Born in Copenhagen, Lerche is the son of a sales representative and a women's hairdresser. A self-taught painter, over the years he has experimented with the use of colour. Completely avoiding motifs, he rigorously aims at making colour the principal means of conveying a message. On the basis of Minimal Art theories, Lerche considers colour rather than motif to be the main component in a painting. His monochrome canvasses are often reworked several times, allowing the additional shades to play against the underlying tone. In Lerche's own words: "The painting does not contain any message as a bottle contains wine. The painting is the message." Thorvaldsen Medal
The Thorvaldsen Medal (Danish: Thorvaldsens Medalje, Thorvaldsen Medaillen) is awarded annually with few exceptions to a varying number of recipients by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and is its highest distinction within the visual arts. It is named after the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. The medal was founded in 1837 as the Exhibition Medal and awarded for talented works in the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in the Charlottenborg Palace. In 1866, it was renamed the Thorvaldsen Exhibition Medal ( da, Thorvaldsenske Udstillings-Medaille), and from 1923 it has been known under its current name. Medal design The medal is executed in silver and designed by the sculptor Christen Christensen (1806–45) in connection with Thorvaldsen's homecoming from Rome in 1838. Minimalism (visual Arts)
Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is set out to expose the essence, essentials or identity of a subject through eliminating all non-essential forms, features or concepts. As a specific movement in the arts it is identified with developments in post–World War II Western Art, most strongly with American visual arts in the 1960s and early 1970s. Prominent artists associated with this movement include Ad Reinhardt, Nassos Daphnis, Tony Smith, Donald Judd, John McCracken, Agnes Martin, Dan Flavin, Robert Morris, Larry Bell, Anne Truitt, Yves Klein and Frank Stella. Artists themselves have sometimes reacted against the label due to the negative implication of the work being simplistic. MS Stena Nautica
MS ''Stena Nautica'' is a ro-pax ferry currently in operation between Halmstad and Grenå for Stena Line. She was completed in 1986 as MS ''Niels Klim'' and served on the DSB Århus – Kalundborg along with her sister MS ''Peder Paars'' until 1991. Concept and construction In September 1983 DSB ordered two relatively large ferries for service on the intra-Denmark Århus–Kalundborg route from in Nakskov, Denmark. Although ordered by the ferry division of the Danish State Railways, the ships did not have the facilities for transporting trains, but were constructed to transport road freight and passengers. Both ships were named after characters from the works of Ludvig Holberg, a Norwegian-born writer considered to be the father of modern Danish literature. First of the ships, delivered in 1985, was named MS ''Peder Paars'' after the poem ''Peder Paars''. Den Frie Udstilling
Den Frie Udstilling ('The Free Exhibition') is a Danish artists' association, founded in 1891 by artists in protest against the admission requirements for the Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Modeled on the Salon des Refusés, it is Denmark's oldest association of artists. Now located on Copenhagen's Oslo Plads next to Østerport Station, it works as an arts centre, continuing to exhibit works created and selected by contemporary artists rather than those chosen by cultural authorities. History The organization was initiated by the painter Johan Rohde (1856–1935) and included several founding members: Jens Ferdinand Willumsen, Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Johanne Cathrine Krebs, the couple Harald and Agnes Slott-Møller, Christian Mourier-Petersen and Malthe Engelsted. The Eckersberg Medal (originally the ''Akademiets Aarsmedaille'' or Annual Academy Medal) is an annual award of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
