Fred And Lucy Alexander Schaer House
The Alexander-Schaer House is a historic house at 13219 United States Route 70, a short way east of Galloway, Arkansas. It is a two-story frame structure, with a gabled tile roof and brick veneer exterior. Built in 1920, it is a fine example of Mission/Spanish Revival architecture, with the tile roof, brick exterior, and decorative ironwork elements all hallmarks of the style. The house is shaded by ancient oaks and a pecan grove overlooking the cypress waters of Hill Lake. The house's design has been attributed to both John Parks Almand (who did work for Lucy Alexander Schaer's family) or Charles L. Thompson, who did work for other members of the Schaer family. The Alexander Schaer House has effectively been an event space since 1920 by the original owners, Fred and Lucy Alexander-Schaer, a Little Rock socialite. United States Route 70
U.S. Route 70 or U.S. Highway 70 (US 70) is an east–west United States highway that runs for from eastern North Carolina to east-central Arizona. It is a major east–west highway of the Southeastern, Southern and Southwestern United States. Established as one of the original highways of 1926, it originally ran only to Holbrook, Arizona, then was extended in 1934 as a coast to coast route, with the current Eastern terminus near the Atlantic Ocean in Atlantic, North Carolina, and the former Western terminus near the Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles, California. The current Western terminus was then truncated to US 60 / SR 77 in Globe, Arizona. Galloway is an unincorporated community located within the city limits of North Little Rock, Arkansas in Pulaski County, Arkansas. It's located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 70 and Arkansas Highway 391. The community is served by I-40 interchange 161. The community is located along the north shore of Hills Lake, a serpentine oxbow formed by a prior channel of the Arkansas River. History The area was settled in the mid-1830s. Galloway Station, as it was originally known, was a stop along the Memphis & Little Rock Railroad and was named in the 1870s for the local farmer and businessman Walter A Galloway. John Parks Almand
John Parks Almand (May 8, 1885 – March 24, 1969) was an American architect who practiced in Arkansas from 1912 to 1962. Among other works, he designed the Art Deco Hot Springs Medical Arts Building, which was the tallest building in Arkansas from 1930 to 1958. Several of his works, including the Medical Arts Building and Little Rock Central High School, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Biography He was born in Lithonia, Georgia. He received a bachelor of science degree from Emory College in 1907 and subsequently received a bachelor of architecture degree from Columbia University in 1911. He then worked as the head of the architecture department for a large engineering company in Cuba for one year. In 1912, he moved to Arkansas to work for the firm of Charles L. Thompson.
