Fred G Hughes
Fred G. Hughes (August 16, 1915October 7, 1996) was an American FBI agent, president and chairman of the board of The Joplin Globe, philanthropist, and one of the founders of Missouri Southern State University. He was a resident of Joplin, Missouri and was married to the former Rebekah Harris Blair. Early life Hughes was raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan and graduated in 1939 with A.B and J.D. degrees from the University of Missouri. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and was selected as one of the Mystical Seven (Missouri), Mystical Seven, a senior men's honorary. In 1942, he married Rebekah Harris Blair and had two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Hughes and Mary Jane Hughes. FBI Agent Hughes practiced law in Joplin for a short period prior to World War II. Missouri Southern State University (Missouri Southern, MSSU, or MoSo) is a public university in Joplin, Missouri. It was established in 1937 as Joplin Junior College. The university enrolled 4,346 students in Fall 2021. History Missouri Southern State University was founded in 1937 as Joplin Junior College. At its conception, Joplin Junior College had 114 students and only 9 faculty members. In 1964, residents of Jasper County, Missouri approved a $2.5 million bond issue to begin construction on a new campus, where the university is currently located. The new campus opened in the fall of 1967 with 2,399 students and 95 faculty members. In 1977, the school was renamed Missouri Southern State College and officially became a state-assisted four-year college and part of the state of Missouri's higher education system. Pittsburg is a city in Crawford County, Kansas, United States, located in southeast Kansas near the Missouri state border. It is the most populous city in Crawford County and southeast Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 20,646. It is home of Pittsburg State University. History On October 23, 1864, a wagon train of refugees had come from Fort Smith, Arkansas, and was escorted by troops from the 6th Kansas Cavalry under the command of Col. William Campbell. These were local men from Cherokee, Crawford, and Bourbon counties. Their enlistment was over, and they were on their way to Fort Leavenworth to be dismissed from service. They ran into the 1st Indian Brigade led by Maj. Andrew Jackson Piercy near the current Pittsburg Waste Water Treatment Plant. Hamptonburgh is a town located in the north central part of Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 5,489 at the 2020 census.
