Franklin County Government Center
The Franklin County Government Center is a government complex of Franklin County, Ohio in the city of Columbus. The government center has included several iterations of the Franklin County Courthouse, including a building completed in 1840 and another completed in 1887. Current courthouse functions are spread out between buildings in the complex. History and structures The tallest building in the complex is the 27-floor, Franklin County Courthouse at 373 South High Street. It is the seventh tallest building in Columbus. This was the third incarnation of the Franklin County Courthouse and hosts the majority of the county government agencies. It was designed by architectural firm DesignGroup, Inc. following the postmodern architectural style. Franklin County Courthouse (1840–1884)
The 1840 Franklin County Courthouse was the first permanent courthouse of Franklin County, Ohio in the United States. The building, located in the county seat of Columbus, stood from 1840 to 1884. The building was replaced with another county courthouse in 1887, and after its demise, that courthouse was replaced with Dorrian Commons Park, open from 1976 to 2018; the courthouse moved to a new building nearby. The site is now planned to host the Franklin County Municipal Court. Attributes The building was a two-story stone structure. It had a tall Ionic columned portico, a centered dome, and two wings with columns ''in antis''. ''Benjamin Franklin'', a 1974 bronze statue of Benjamin Franklin, stands inside the Franklin County Government Center in Columbus, Ohio. The statue was created by James P. Anderson and cast in Pietrasanta, Italy. Description The work was created by sculptor James P. Anderson. The statue shows Franklin cloaked, though parting the cloak to reveal typical colonial statesman wear. The statue was designed to be on an 8-ft. granite pedestal outside the government center, on its mall just north of the Franklin County Hall of Justice at the southwest corner of Mound and High Street (Columbus, Ohio), High streets. ''Oval with Points'' is a series of enigmatic abstract sculptures by British sculptor Henry Moore, made in plaster and bronze from 1968 to 1970, from a maquette in 1968 (LH 594) made in plaster and then cast in bronze, through a working model in 1968–1969 (LH 595) also made plaster and then cast in bronze, to a full-size bronze version cast in 1969 (LH 596). Description The sculpture is a flattened oval ring with rounded edges, pierced by a large hole. The inside edge of the hole has two protrusions rising from opposite sides and narrowing to sharp points that almost meet at the centre of the hole, creating a sense of energy and dynamic tension. The points divide the hole into two areas, a smaller one above and a larger one below, like a figure 8, with the shape of the void sometimes interpreted as resembling a human form with a head and a torso. Henry Moore
Henry Spencer Moore (30 July 1898 – 31 August 1986) was an English artist. He is best known for his semi- abstract monumental bronze sculptures which are located around the world as public works of art. As well as sculpture, Moore produced many drawings, including a series depicting Londoners sheltering from the Blitz during the Second World War, along with other graphic works on paper. His forms are usually abstractions of the human figure, typically depicting mother-and-child or reclining figures.
