Franklin County Courthouse And Jail
The Franklin County Courthouse and Jail in Mount Vernon, Texas was built in 1912. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The listing includes two contributing buildings: the courthouse and the jail. The design of a prior Franklin County courthouse, while not necessarily itself especially architecturally distinguished, was copied in the design of the Old Morris County Courthouse. The prior courthouse was built in 1875. Its successor, the present courthouse, built in 1912, was designed by L.L. Thurman in Classical Revival style. The courthouse is a three-story sandstone building with full height columned and pedimented porticoes on two sides. It has an octagonal, domed clock tower. The jail, also built in 1912, is a square two-story small building. With 14 figures and five photos from 2005. Mount Vernon, Texas
Mount Vernon is a town and the county seat of Franklin County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,491 at the 2020 United States census. History Mount Vernon started as a settlement near the Fanning Springs (on Holbrook Street south of the present town square). Affidavits filed to establish land titles soon after the Texas Revolution document the settlement by squatters in Spanish Texas commencing in 1818. By 1848 the United States government established a post office, and in 1849 a formal town site was laid out on land donated by Stephen and Rebecca Keith for the town of Mount Vernon. Since there were two other Mount Vernons in Texas, the post office was called "Keith" and then "Lone Star" before the name "Mount Vernon" became available in 1875. Franklin County was carved out of Titus County in 1875, and Mount Vernon was elected county seat in competition with other communities. Jeff Davis County Courthouse (Texas)
The Jeff Davis County Courthouse is located in the town of Fort Davis, the seat of Jeff Davis County in the U.S. state of Texas. The courthouse was constructed between 1910-1911 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has also designated the building as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 2000 and, along with the surrounding courthouse square, as a State Antiquities Landmark since 2003. A portico is a porch leading to the entrance of a building, or extended as a colonnade, with a roof structure over a walkway, supported by columns or enclosed by walls. Pediments are gables, usually of a triangular shape. Pediments are placed above the horizontal structure of the lintel, or entablature, if supported by columns. Pediments can contain an overdoor and are usually topped by hood moulds. A pediment is sometimes the top element of a portico. The Old Morris County Courthouse in Daingerfield, Texas is a historic courthouse built in 1882. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It was later used as the Morris County Museum. It was the first seat of government in Morris County, Texas, which was split from an adjacent county in 1875.
