Frank O'Rourke (rugby League)
Frank O'Rourke (1906 - 1994) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s. He played at representative level for New South Wales, City and Other Nationalities, and at club level for University of Sydney (whom he also captained) and Leeds, as a or . Background O'Rourke was born in Hinton, near Morpeth, New South Wales, Australia in 1906, he was the cousin of the boxer; Les Darcy, he learned rugby league football while attending Marist Brothers High School in West Maitland. Playing career O'Rourke continued with football whilst attending the University of Sydney in the early 1920s. He usually played on the wing, and was highly regarded as a future representative player. He went on to captain the club during 1926 and 1927. O'Rourke represented New South Wales and City, while at University of Sydney. Hinton is a suburb of the Port Stephens Council, Port Stephens Local government in Australia, local government area in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. The New South Wales Rugby League premiership was the first rugby league football club competition established in Australia and contributor to today's National Rugby League. Run by the New South Wales Rugby League (initially named the New South Wales Rugby Football League) from 1908 until 1994, the premiership was the state's elite rugby league competition, parallel to Queensland's first-class league, the Brisbane Rugby League. For most of the premiership's history it was contested by clubs from the state of New South Wales only, but later attempted to grow into a nationwide competition, eventually leading to the competition being played under the auspices of the Australian Rugby League in 1995. Batley is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire, England. Season summary Huddersfield won their fifth Championship, and their second in successive years, when they defeated Leeds 10–0 in the play–off final replay following a 2–2 draw. St. Helens had finished the regular season as league leaders. The Challenge Cup Winners were Widnes after beating St. Helens 10–3 in the final. St. Helens won the Lancashire League, and Huddersfield won the Yorkshire League. 1928–29 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1928–29 Rugby Football League season was the 34th season of rugby league football. Season summary Huddersfield won their fourth Championship when they beat Leeds 2-0 in the play-off final. On 4 May 1929 the first Challenge Cup Final to be held at Wembley Stadium was played. 41,500 saw Wigan beat Dewsbury 13-2. Carlisle City fielded a team, but resigned after 10 matches and their record was expunged from the table. They won 1 and lost 9, scoring 59 and conceding 166. Swinton moved from their Chorley Road ground this season due to a dispute over rent. They built a new stadium at Station Road, Swinton using the stands from the old ground. St Helens Recreation RLFC
St Helens Recreation Rugby League Football Club, often known as St Helens Recs or just the Recs, is a former professional rugby league club from St. Helens, Lancashire, that played in the Rugby Football League during the inter-war years. The club had a great rivalry with St Helens RFC. History The club was founded in 1878 as part of the sports and recreational provision of Pilkington Glass. Initially the side played rugby union but in 1898 voted to abandon rugby for association football. However, on 14 June 1913, to settle the future of the club, it was announced that it was to abandon association football to concentrate on rugby football. Try (rugby)
A try is a way of scoring points in rugby union and rugby league football. A try is scored by grounding the ball in the opposition's in-goal area (on or behind the goal line). Rugby union and league differ slightly in defining "grounding the ball" and the "in-goal" area. In rugby union a try is worth 5 points, in rugby league a try is worth 4 points. The term "try" comes from "try at goal", signifying that grounding the ball originally only gave the attacking team the opportunity to try to score with a kick at goal. A try is analogous to a touchdown in American and Canadian football, with the major difference being that a try requires the ball be simultaneously touching the ground and an attacking player, whereas a touchdown merely requires that the ball enter the end zone while in the possession of a player. Bradford Bulls
The Bradford Bulls are a professional rugby league club in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, playing in the Championship. They have won five Challenge Cups, six league championships and three World Club Challenges. The team jersey is predominantly white with red, amber and black chevrons. In 1907, Bradford F.C., founder member of the Rugby Football League, switched codes to association football and Bradford Northern, often abbreviated to Northern, was formed by members who wished to continue rugby. Walter Leslie Desmond (born 6 January 1906) was a New Zealand professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1920s and 1930s.
