Frank Hawkins (politician)
Francis Harold "Frank" Hawkins (1 June 1897 – 20 December 1971) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Parliament from 1935 until 1968 and held a number of ministerial positions in the Government of New South Wales. He was a member of the Labor Party. Early life and career Hawkins was born in Tenterfield and was educated to intermediate level at De La Salle College, Armidale. He worked initially with the Postmaster General's department and then the NSW Department of Railways. He was transferred to Newcastle Railway Station in 1933. He died in Newcastle in 1971 at the age of 74, and was buried at Sandgate Cemetery following a service at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hamilton. Political career He successfully contested the Legislative Assembly seat of Newcastle as the Lang Labor candidate in the 1935 general election. Sandgate Cemetery
Sandgate Cemetery is a necropolis in the Hunter region near Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, and has been continuously operating since 1881. The cemetery caters for all religious, ethnic and cultural requirements. History Sandgate Cemetery was opened in 1881 and has serviced the burial needs of Newcastle since that time. It is situated on Crown Land within the suburb of Sandgate, New South Wales. The cemetery is managed by a not for profit community organisation, Northern Cemeteries, through a Board of Trustees. To service the new cemetery, a special Mortuary Station was built in Newcastle. Special trams conveyed funerals from the suburbs to the Mortuary Station then onward to a purpose built platform within the cemetery. Arthur Dalgety Bridges, (19 November 1901 – 22 May 1968) was an Australian Chartered accountant, company director and politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council for the 22 years from 1946 to 1968 representing the Liberal Party, becoming Leader of the New South Wales Opposition in the Legislative Council from 1962 until 1965. Abe Landa
Abram Landa (10 November 1902 – 7 October 1989) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1930 until 1932 and from 1941 until 1965. He was variously a member of the Australian Labor Party (NSW) and the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch). He held a number of ministerial positions between 1953 and 1965. Early and personal life Landa was born in Belfast, Ireland and migrated to Sydney with his widowed mother in 1910. He was educated at Christian Brothers, Waverley and won a scholarship to study law at the University of Sydney. He practiced as a solicitor mainly in Industrial Law and joined the ALP in 1919. Arthur Wade
William Arthur Wade (25 March 1919 – 24 August 2014) was an Australian politician, elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Wade was born in the Newcastle suburb of Carrington and educated at Carrington Public School and Broadmeadow High School. During World War II he served in the Second Australian Imperial Force from 1939 in the 2/3 Field Regiment. He was captured in 1941 and was a prisoner of war in Germany and Poland until the end of the war in 1945. After the war he was a shopkeeper and married Heather Muncaster in August 1949 and they had two sons and one daughter. Wade was an alderman on Newcastle City Council from 1947 to 1968, including a year as Deputy Lord Mayor in 1958. Bob Heffron
Robert James Heffron (10 September 189027 July 1978), also known as Bob Heffron or R. J. Heffron, was a long-serving New South Wales politician, union organiser and Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), Labor Party Premier of New South Wales from 1959 to 1964. Born in New Zealand, Heffron became involved in various Socialist and labour movements in New Zealand and later Australia before joining the Australian Labor Party. Being a prominent unionist organiser, having been gaoled at one stage for "conspiracy to strike action", he was eventually elected to the Parliament of New South Wales for Electoral district of Botany, Botany in 1930. James McGirr
James "Jim" McGirr, Justice of the peace, JP (6 February 1890 – 27 October 1957) was the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), Labor Premier of New South Wales from 6 February 1947 to 3 April 1952. A Catholic, McGirr was the seventh son of John Patrick McGirr, farmer and Irish immigrant, and Mary McGirr, whose maiden name was O'Sullivan. Lang Labor
Lang Labor was a faction of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) consisting of the supporters of Jack Lang, who served two terms as Premier of New South Wales and was the party's state leader from 1923 to 1939. Following the expulsion of the NSW branch by the Federal Executive during the Federal Conference in March 1931, the expelled branch led by Lang ran as Australian Labor Party (New South Wales) in state and federal elections. Lang Labor reconciled with Labor in February 1936.
