Francisco De Haro
Francisco de Haro (1792 – November 28, 1849) was a Californio politician, soldier, and ranchero, who served as the 1st and 5th Alcalde of San Francisco (initially known as Yerba Buena). He notably commissioned the first land survey of San Francisco to Jean Jacques Vioget in 1839. Biography De Haro was born in Compostela, Nayarit, in colonial Mexico. He came to the Presidio of San Francisco as a soldier in 1819. De Haro became the first ''Alcalde'' (mayor) of the pueblo of Yerba Buena in 1834. He was instrumental in planning the street grid of the town along with Englishman William A. Richardson in 1835. In 1837, de Haro bought the Rancho Laguna de la Merced, which included Lake Merced and portions of northern San Mateo County, from the grantee José Antonio Galindo. Lake Merced
Lake Merced ( es, Laguna de Merced) is a freshwater lake in the southwest corner of San Francisco, in the U.S. state of California. It is surrounded by three golf courses (the private Olympic Club and San Francisco Golf Club, and the public TPC Harding Park), as well as residential areas, Lowell High School (San Francisco), Lowell High School, San Francisco State University, Lakeshore Alternative Elementary School, Stonestown Galleria, Fort Funston and the Pacific Ocean. Rancho Laguna De La Merced
Rancho Laguna de la Merced (also known as the Galindo ranch) was a Mexican land grant, in present-day southwestern San Francisco and northwestern San Mateo County, California. It was given in 1835 by Governor José Castro to José Antonio Galindo. The grant encompassed the area around Lake Merced in San Francisco and the present day Daly City neighborhoods of Westlake, and Serramonte. History José Galindo was a corporal in the Presidio of San Francisco militia in Alta California. His grandfather, Nicolás Galindo, had accompanied the De Anza Expedition as a settler in Las Californias province in 1776. José Joaquín Estudillo
José Joaquín Estudillo (May 7, 1800 – June 7, 1852) was a Californio statesman and ranchero who served as the 2nd Alcalde of San Francisco (then known as Yerba Buena). A member of the prominent Estudillo family of California, he is also considered the founder of the city of San Leandro. Biography He was born at the Presidio of Monterey, to José María Estudillo, a Spanish soldier; his brother José Antonio Estudillo also played an important role in the settling of California. José Joaquín joined the Spanish Army himself at the age of 15 as a ''soldado distinguido'' ("distinguished soldier") at the Monterey Presidio. It is unclear when he moved to Yerba Buena, but records indicate that he was the commissioner in charge of the secularization of Mission San Francisco de Asís at the beginning of 1835. Kit Carson
Christopher Houston Carson (December 24, 1809 – May 23, 1868) was an American frontiersman. He was a fur trapper, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and U.S. Army officer. He became a frontier legend in his own lifetime by biographies and news articles, and exaggerated versions of his exploits were the subject of dime novels. José de la Cruz Sánchez (November 8, 1799 – 1878) was a Californio statesman and ranchero who served as the eleventh Alcalde of San Francisco. Life José de la Cruz Sánchez was born November 8, 1799, in Santa Clara, California. He was the eldest son of Ana Josefa Soto and José Antonio Sánchez (1773–1843), a land grantee of Rancho Buri Buri (also called Sánchez Rancho) in present-day San Mateo County. Rancho Buri Buri extended between the north line of South San Francisco and the middle of Burlingame, and from the San Francisco Bay to the top of the Peninsula ridge and included present-day Lomita Park, Millbrae, South San Francisco, San Bruno, and the northern part of Burlingame.
