Francis Gibson (writer)
Francis Gibson (16 January 1753 (baptised)24 July 1805) was an English writer and occasional painter. Gibson was born and baptised in Whitby on 16 January 1753. He was the son of Joseph and Mary Gibson. He became a seaman, voyaged to North America, and afterwards, as master mariner in a ship of his father's, to the Baltic. In 1787 he was, on the recommendation of Lord Mulgrave, appointed to the collectorship of customs at Whitby, which office he held till his death on 24 July 1805. He was twice married, and had issue. Notable works * ''Sailing Directions for the Baltic'', 1791. These are said to have been employed with advantage by the Battle of Copenhagen of 1801 under Sir Hyde Parker and Nelson. * ''Streanshall Abbey, or the Danish Invasion'', Whitby, 1800. This is a play in five acts, dedicated to Lady Mulgrave. It was first performed at the Whitby Theatre 2 December 1799. Francis Gibson (1805-1858), was a British banker and businessman. Early life He was born in Saffron Walden, Essex, the son of the banker Atkinson Francis Gibson (1763-1829). Career Soon after his marriage, Gibson became a director of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Soon afterwards, he was one of the four Quaker founders of Middlesbrough. Although still base in Saffron Walden, Gibson and his wife spent two months every summer in County Durham and bought a house there, Balder Grange, in 1843. The Victorian house is close to Cotherstone and overlooks the River Balder. Personal life On 7 May 1829, he married Elizabeth Pease, the youngest daughter of Edward Pease, "the father of the railways". Francis D. Gibson is an American politician and was a Republican member of the Utah House of Representatives representing District 65 from January 2009 to November 2021. His abrupt resignation in the middle of his term was unexpected, as he cited personal obligations. Early life and career Gibson earned his BS from Brigham Young University and his MSW from the University of Houston. He currently works as a health administrator and lives in Mapleton, Utah with his wife Sheila.
