Francis Forbes
Sir Francis William Forbes (1784 – 8 November 1841) was a Chief Justice of Newfoundland, and the first Chief Justice of New South Wales. Early life Forbes was born and educated in Bermuda, the son of Dr. Francis Forbes M.D. and his wife Mary, née Tucker. His elder half-brother was Very Rev Patrick Forbes who was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1829. At the age of 19 Francis travelled to London, England to study law at Lincoln's Inn. He was called to the Bar in 1812 and became a Crown Law Officer in Bermuda and married Amelia Sophia Grant in 1813, returning to England in 1815. Newfoundland In 1816 he was invited to be Chief Justice of Newfoundland, and was sworn in at St. John's in July, 1816. While in Newfoundland, he severely curtailed the powers of the naval governors. Francis Blackwell Forbes (August 11, 1839 – May 2, 1908) was an American botanist with expertise in Chinese seed-producing plants who also worked as a merchant and opium trader in Asia. Early life Francis Blackwell Forbes was born in New York on August 11, 1839, one of three children of the Reverend John Murray Forbes, rector of St. Luke's, New York, and his wife Anne Howell. Forbes was a cousin of John Murray Forbes and is a maternal great-grandfather of 2004 U.S. presidential candidate John Kerry. The Forbes family actively engaged in the opium trade and in the Old China Trade during the First and Second Opium Wars, amassing a large fortune. Forbes was educated at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School in New York. Career After Columbia, Forbes went to China and became a partner in Russell & Co., a firm that was dominant in Far Eastern commerce in the 19th century. Francis Gordon Forbes
Francis Gordon Forbes (December 27, 1857 – September 4, 1941) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Queens and then Shelburne and Queen's in the House of Commons of Canada from 1891 to 1896 as a Liberal member. He was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, the son of James Fraser Forbes and Sarah Jane Jacobs. Forbes was educated at St. Peter's School in Prince Edward Island and the University of King's College in Windsor. He was admitted to the Nova Scotia bar in 1883. In 1887, he married Harriette Frances Collins. He practised law in Halifax. Forbes resigned his seat in July 1896 after he was named sub-Collector of Customs. In 1897, he was named a county court judge for Nova Scotia, serving until 1921.
