Francis Brown (theologian)
The Rev. Francis Brown (December 26, 1849 – 1916) American Semitic scholar, was born in Hanover, New Hampshire. He was the son of Samuel Gilman Brown (1813–1885), president of Hamilton College from 1867 to 1881, and the grandson of Francis Brown, whose removal from the presidency of Dartmouth College and later restoration were incidental to the famous Dartmouth College case. The younger Francis graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover in 1866, from Dartmouth in 1870 and from the Union Theological Seminary in 1877, and then studied in Berlin. In 1879 he became instructor in biblical philology at the Union Theological Seminary, in 1881 an associate professor of the same subject, and in 1890 Davenport Professor of Hebrew and the cognate Languages. Brown's published works won him an honorary doctorate of Divinity from the University of Glasgow (1901), and a D.Litt. from the University of Oxford, as well as honorary doctorates from Dartmouth and Yale. Francis Brown (college President)
Francis Brown (January 11, 1784 – July 27, 1820) was an American Congregational minister who served as the 3rd president of Dartmouth College. He graduated from the college in 1805 and from 1806–1809 held a tutorship there. He also served as a pastor of the Meetinghouse under the Ledge in North Yarmouth, Massachusetts (now Yarmouth, Maine). Brown was removed from his presidency at the college as part of the actions that resulted in the Dartmouth College case, but was reinstated following the 1819 decision in favor of the college. Francis Brown is a Franco-British mathematician who works on Arithmetic geometry and Quantum Field Theory. Career Brown studied at the University of Cambridge and the École normale supérieure (Paris) and University of Bordeaux, with Pierre Cartier, graduating in 2006 with a Ph.D. He then spent time at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics and Mittag-Leffler Institute. In 2007 he moved to Institut de mathématiques de Jussieu – Paris Rive Gauche where he won a European Research Council starter grant in 2010. In 2012, he moved to the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques and was awarded a CNRS Bronze Medal and Élie Cartan Prize for his proof of two conjectures related to multiple zeta functions. Francis Ernest Brown (1869-1939) was headmaster of Geelong Church of England Grammar School, Victoria, Australia from 1912 until his retirement in 1929. Biography Brown was born on 12 March 1869 in Bristol. He attended Bristol Grammar School where he was head boy, followed by Hertford College, Oxford. He graduated in 1892 and became senior mathematics master at Hulme Grammar School in Manchester. He was then appointed senior mathematics master at King Edward VII School, Sheffield in 1905; in 1908 he succeeded H J Chaytor as second master until 1911. In 1912 he took up the headmastership of Geelong Church of England Grammar school, Victoria. Colonel Francis David Millet Brown VC (7 August 1837 – 21 November 1895) was a British recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Francis Focer Brown (January 19, 1891 – April 14, 1971) was an American Impressionist painter, as well as professor and head of the Fine Arts Department at Ball State Teachers College (present-day Ball State University) in Muncie, Indiana from 1925 until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1957, and was director of the Ball State Art Gallery until 1946. He exhibited his work at the Hoosier Salon shows between 1922 and 1964, winning several awards for his oils, pastels, and watercolors between 1925 and 1945. He also won prizes for works he exhibited at the John Herron Art Institute and the Richmond Art Museum in 1922. Francis Graham Brown
George Francis Graham-Brown (27 January 1891 – 23 November 1942) was an Anglican bishop in the second quarter of the 20th century. Life Graham-Brown was educated at Monkton Combe School and St Catharine's College, Cambridge. After World War I service with the King's Own Scottish Borderers during which he was wounded in the head and eventually invalided out of the service, and three years as a History Master at his former school, he was ordained in 1922. Francis Shunk Brown (June 9, 1858 – May 6, 1940) was an American lawyer from Pennsylvania who served one term as Pennsylvania Attorney General from 1915 to 1919 and ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary for Governor in 1930. Francis Harold Brown (October 24, 1943 – September 30, 2017) was an American geologist and geochemist who mapped the sedimentary sequence and geology of most of the Turkana Basin in Kenya, east Africa. Brown introduced single-crystal argon-argon and potassium-argon dating into the Turkana Basin, resolving disputes over the age of '' Kenyanthropus platyops'' and other fossils. Early life Brown was born in Willits, California, to Vivien Clarice Jameson Brown and carpenter and viticulturist Francis Edward Brown. Vice-Admiral Francis Clifton Brown C.B., C.M.G., (10 July 1874 – 6 September 1963) was an officer of the Royal Navy. Early life Brown was born 10 July 1874 in Lower Beeding in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England.
