Francis Beattie (Queensland Politician)
Francis Beattie (29 August 1829 – 16 April 1886) was a hatter and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Beattie was born in Dumfries, Scotland to parents Francis Beattie and his wife Susannah (née Hannah). He attended school in Carlisle, Cumberland and became a sailor as a boy. In 1849, whilst in a new Zealand port, there was a disturbance amongst the crew and the captain of the ship refused to proceed but Beattie took charge and navigated the vessel to Port Phillip where he gained work as a pilot. During the Canoona gold rush he sailed to Keppel Bay and later visited Brisbane. He finally settled in Brisbane in 1862, arriving on the ''Maryborough''. In 1850 he married Janet Ross (died 1887) in Brisbane, and together had five sons and five daughters. A member of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows, he died April 1886. Electoral District Of Fortitude Valley
Fortitude Valley, originally known as Hamlet of Fortitude Valley, was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. History Fortitude Valley was one of the original sixteen electorates proclaimed in 1859. It was originally known as "Hamlet of Fortitude Valley", but the name was shortened to "Fortitude Valley" in the 1872 redistribution. Initially it was a single member constituency, but became a dual member constituency in 1885, reverting to a single member in the 1910 redistribution. The electorate was abolished in the 1959 redistribution, mostly being incorporated into the Electoral district of Brisbane and the Electoral district of Merthyr. Notably, Fortitude Valley was the first electorate in any Australian parliament to be contested by a member of the labour movement, with William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Brisbane Trades and Labour Council and secretary of the Seamen's Union, unsuccessfully contesting the 1888 by-election. Carlisle, Cumbria
Carlisle ( , ; from xcb, Caer Luel) is a city that lies within the Northern English county of Cumbria, south of the Scottish border at the confluence of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril. It is the administrative centre of the City of Carlisle district which, (along with Cumbria County Council) will be replaced by Cumberland Council in April 2023. The city became an established settlement during the Roman Empire to serve forts on Hadrian's Wall. During the Middle Ages, the city was an important military stronghold due to its proximity to the Kingdom of Scotland. Carlisle Castle, still relatively intact, was built in 1092 by William Rufus, served as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots in 1568 and now houses the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the Border Regiment Museum. The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. It has been the only unicameral state legislature in the country since the upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. Brisbane Municipal Council
The Town of Brisbane was a local government area for Brisbane in Queensland, Australia from 1859 to 1903. History The Municipality of Brisbane was gazetted on 25 May 1859 and proclaimed by the Governor of New South Wales on 7 September 1859. The first local government area in Queensland, Brisbane was the only one incorporated prior to the establishment of Queensland as a separate colony. After the passing of the Municipal Institutions Act 1864 the area could establish a municipal council to administer the district – with powers relating to by-laws, to rating, to borrowings, to the control or regulation of public infrastructure and utilities, and to the provision of public amenities such as gardens and hospitals. Canoona Gold Rush
During the Australian gold rushes, starting in 1851, significant numbers of workers moved from elsewhere in Australia and overseas to where gold had been discovered. Gold had been found several times before, but the colonial government of New South Wales (Victoria did not become a separate colony until 1 July 1851) had suppressed the news out of the fear that it would reduce the workforce and so destabilise the economy.
