France–Uruguay Relations
France–Uruguay relations are the current and historical relations between the French Republic and the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. Both nations enjoy friendly relations, the importance of which centers on the history of French migration to Uruguay. In the late 19th century, one-third of Uruguay's population was of French descent. Both nations are members of the United Nations. History In 1825, Uruguay obtained its independence after the Cisplatine War. Soon afterwards, both nations established diplomatic relations. Bilateralism
Bilateralism is the conduct of political, economic, or cultural relations between two sovereign states. It is in contrast to unilateralism or multilateralism, which is activity by a single state or jointly by multiple states, respectively. When states recognize one another as sovereign states and agree to diplomatic relations, they create a bilateral relationship. States with bilateral ties will exchange diplomatic agents such as ambassadors to facilitate dialogues and cooperations. Economic agreements, such as free trade agreements (FTA) or foreign direct investment (FDI), signed by two states, are a common example of bilateralism. Daniel Fernández Crespo
Daniel Fernández Crespo (28 April 1901 – 28 July 1964) was a Uruguayan political figure. Background and early career Fernández Crespo belonged to the National Party, and entered politics in the early 1930s. Formerly a schoolteacher, by the time he assumed Presidential office he had achieved a reputation as a prolific sponsor of reformist legislation, including in the fields of accident insurance and pensions. From 1954 till 1958 he served as minority member of the National Council of Government of Uruguay. Jean-Pierre Bel (born 30 December 1951) is a French retired politician who served as President of the Senate from 2011 to 2014. From the Ariège department, Bel is a member of the Socialist Party; he was elected to the Senate in September 1998 and re-elected in September 2008. Yamina Benguigui (born Yamina Zora Belaïdi; in Lille on 9 April 1955) is a French film director and politician of Algerian descent. She is known for her films on gender issues in the North African (both Berbers and Arabs) immigrant community in France.
