France competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 7 September to 18 September 2016. The first places the team qualified were for four athletes in sailing events. Disability classifications Every participant at the Paralympics has their disability grouped into one of five disability categories; amputation, the condition may be congenital or sustained through injury or illness; cerebral palsy; wheelchair athletes, there is often overlap between this and other categories; visual impairment, including blindness; Les autres, any physical disability that does not fall strictly under one of the other categories, for example dwarfism or multiple sclerosis. Each Paralympic sport then has its own classifications, dependent upon the specific physical demands of competition. Nantenin Keïta
Nantenin Keïta (born 5 November 1984, in Bamako) is a French athlete who competes mainly in Paralympic category T13 sprint events. She is the daughter of the Malian musician Salif Keita and thus a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire, Sundiata Keita. Like her father, she was born with albinism, and is visually impaired. Competition She competed in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. Wheelchair Fencing At The 2016 Summer Paralympics
Wheelchair fencing at the 2016 Summer Paralympics was held in Rio from 4 September to 8 September 2016. Classification Fencers are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows fencers to compete against others with a similar level of function. Fencing has two ability classes, A and B, two genders and three weapons, epee, foil and sabre. Wheelchairs were anchored to the ground during competition. Robert Citerne
Robert Citerne (born 10 February 1961 in Paris) is a French wheelchair fencer, who earned four gold medals out of seven Paralympic participations. He is also three-time World champion and eight-time European champion in individual and team events. Citerne has right hemiplegia since he was six months old. He took up fencing at the age of 19 after his physical therapist suggested it to him. He joined in 1987 the France national team, of which he is still a member. He is known in the fencing community as “Bob le Ouf”, literally “Crazy Bob” because of his exuberant personality. Table tennis at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio took place in September 2016. 276 athletes – 174 men and 102 women – are scheduled to compete in 29 events. Table tennis events have been held at the Paralympics since the first Games in Rome in 1960. Team events will feature contests consisting of one doubles and two singles matches. Sailing At The 2016 Summer Paralympics
Sailing at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro took place between 12 and 17 September 2016 in Marina da Glória, Copacabana. 80 competitors, 11 of which were female, competed in three keelboat classes. Three sailing events will be held. All were mixed events, meaning that men and women can compete together. Classification International disability classification in sailing is done by a committee, which gives each competitor a number score with lower numbers corresponding to more severe disability. Sailors are classified under the IFDS Functional Classification System. To take part in Paralympic sailing, an athlete must have a score of 7 or less.
