Fotografie der Gegenwart (Photography of the Present) was a photographic exhibition which was one of the most important between-the-wars photographic exhibitions, particularly for its inclusion of so many artists associated with the Bauhaus/Expressionist movements. The event was a Who's Who of Mitteleuropa photography of the period. The show was organised and curated by the art historian . Hugo Erfurth
Hugo Erfurth (14 October 1874 – 14 February 1948) was a German photographer known for his portraits of celebrities and cultural figures of the early twentieth century. Life Early years Erfurth was born in Halle (Saale), in what was then the German Empire. He grew up on his parents’ farm in Schönau and visited a parish school in Niederschonal in 1883. By 1884, Erfurth was at school in Dresden. From 1892 to 1896, he studied painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. In 1894, while still at school, he studied photography through an apprenticeship with court photographer Wilhelm Höffer. Two years later, at the age of 22, he took over the studio of J. S. Schröder at Johannstadt, Dresden. Erfurth’s early surviving works show a commitment to the style of Pictorialism. Walter Peterhans
Walter Peterhans (12 June 1897 – 12 April 1960) was a German photographer best known as a teacher and course leader of photography at the Bauhaus from 1929 until 1933, and at the Reimann School in Berlin under Hugo Häring. In the 1930s Peterhans was a proponent of the Neues Sehen (New Vision) movement, taking close-up, still-life photographs of everyday objects and images that played with unusual angles and lighting. At the Bauhaus, Peterhans' teaching involved using the theories of Kant, Plato and Pythagoras to show how beauty is constructed in the mind, and how it can be created in works of art. Heinz Von Perckhammer
Heinz (Heinrich Josef Anton Alois) von Perckhammer (1895–1965) was a Tyrolean photographer best known for his Chinese nudes and Beijing street scenes. Life Perckhammer was born in Merano, Austria-Hungary (now Italy) on 3 March 1895. In the First World War he served aboard the SMS Kaiserin Elisabeth during the Siege of Tsingtao and from 1917 to 1919 was a Japanese prisoner of war. He remained in China for several years after his release. In 1928 two volumes of his photographs were published in Berlin: one of carefully posed Chinese nudes, many taken in Macao brothels, under the title ''Edle nacktheit in China'' (The Culture of the Nude in China), and one of Beijing street photography, as ''Peking''. Alice Lex-Nerlinger
Alice Lex-Nerlinger (29 October 1893 – 21 July 1975) was a German mid-20th century artist in the media of painting, photography, photomontage and photograms. Early life Born on 29 October 1893, Alice was the youngest of six children of Nathalie (née Drägen) and Heinrich "Fritz" Pfeffer, owners of a gas lamp factory on Moritzplatz in Berlin-Kreuzberg. From 1899 she attended the Royal Augusta Girls School in Kleinbeerenstrasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg, but the early death of the father left the family in straitened circumstances, and she was moved in 1910 to a girls' boarding school under the direction of Baroness von Wrangel, but absconded after three months. László Moholy-Nagy
László Moholy-Nagy (; ; born László Weisz; July 20, 1895 – November 24, 1946) was a Hungarian painter and photographer as well as a professor in the Bauhaus school. He was highly influenced by constructivism and a strong advocate of the integration of technology and industry into the arts. The art critic Peter Schjeldahl called him "relentlessly experimental" because of his pioneering work in painting, drawing, photography, collage, sculpture, film, theater, and writing. He also worked collaboratively with other artists, including his first wife Lucia Moholy, Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, and Herbert Bayer. His largest accomplishment may be the School of Design in Chicago, which survives today as part of the Illinois Institute of Technology, which art historian Elizabeth Siegel called "his overarching work of art". Man Ray (born Emmanuel Radnitzky; August 27, 1890 – November 18, 1976) was an American visual artist who spent most of his career in Paris. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealism, Surrealist movements, although his ties to each were informal. Eli Lotar
Eli Lotar (born Eliazar Lotar Teodorescu; January 30, 1905 – May 10, 1969) was a French photographer and cinematographer. Helmar Lerski
Helmar Lerski (18 February 1871, in Strasbourg – 19 September 1956, in Zürich) was a photographer who laid some of the important foundations of modern photography. His works are on display in the USA, Germany, Israel and Switzerland. He focused mainly on portraits and the technique of photography with mirrors. His real name was Israel Schmuklerski. In 1876, the family moved to Zürich, Switzerland, where the family was naturalized. In 1888, Lerski emigrated to the United States, where he worked as an actor. Around 1910, he began to photograph. André Kertész
André Kertész (; 2 July 1894 – 28 September 1985), born Andor Kertész, was a Hungarian-born photographer known for his groundbreaking contributions to photographic composition (visual arts), composition and the photo essay. In the early years of his career, his then-unorthodox camera angles and style prevented his work from gaining wider recognition.
