Fort St
A fortification is a military construction or building designed for the defense of territories in warfare, and is also used to establish rule in a region during peacetime. The term is derived from Latin ''fortis'' ("strong") and ''facere'' ("to make"). From very early history to modern times, defensive walls have often been necessary for cities to survive in an ever-changing world of invasion and conquest. Some settlements in the Indus Valley civilization were the first small cities to be fortified. In ancient Greece, large stone walls had been built in Mycenaean Greece, such as the ancient site of Mycenae (famous for the huge stone blocks of its 'cyclopean' walls). A Greek '' phrourion'' was a fortified collection of buildings used as a military garrison, and is the equivalent of the Roman castellum or English fortress. Fort St George In England
The Fort St George In England is the oldest pub on the River Cam in Cambridge, England. The Grade II listed timber-framed building on Midsummer Common dates in part from the 16th century, and although "much altered and enlarged over the years, still has considerable charm. Especially notable is the snug to the right of the main entrance which has some wonderful ancient panelling and a good tiled floor." The pub is owned by the Greene King brewery. The Popham Colony—also known as the Sagadahoc Colony—was a short-lived English colonial settlement in North America. It was established in 1607 by the proprietary Plymouth Company and was located in the present-day town of Phippsburg, Maine, near the mouth of the Kennebec River. It was founded a few months after its more successful rival, the colony at Jamestown. That colony was established on May 4, 1607 (Old Style, May 14 N.S.) by the London Company in present-day James City County, Virginia. The Popham Colony was the second colony in the region that would eventually become known as New England. The first colony was St. Croix Island, near what is now the town of Calais. (St. Croix Island was settled initially in June 1604, then moved in 1605 by Samuel de Champlain to the Bay of Fundy). HMAT Wandilla
SS ''Wandilla'' was a steamship built in 1912 for the Adelaide Steamship Company. The ship operated on the Fremantle to Sydney run until 1915, when she was acquired for military service and redesignated HMAT ''Wandilla''. Initially used as a troop transport, the vessel was converted to a hospital ship in 1916. ''Wandilla'' was returned to her owners at the end of the war, then was sold to the Bermuda & West Indies SS Company and renamed ''Fort St. George'' in 1921. She was sold in 1935 to Lloyd Triestino and renamed ''Cesarea'' before being renamed ''Arno'' in 1938. At the start of World War II, the ship was acquired by the Regia Marina for use as a hospital ship. She was sunk by British aircraft on 10 September 1942.
