Fort
A fortification is a military construction or building designed for the defense of territories in warfare, and is also used to establish rule in a region during peacetime. The term is derived from Latin ''fortis'' ("strong") and ''facere'' ("to make"). From very early history to modern times, defensive walls have often been necessary for cities to survive in an ever-changing world of invasion and conquest. Some settlements in the Indus Valley civilization were the first small cities to be fortified. In ancient Greece, large stone walls had been built in Mycenaean Greece, such as the ancient site of Mycenae (famous for the huge stone blocks of its 'cyclopean' walls). Michael McKenry
Michael Charles McKenry (born March 4, 1985), nicknamed "The Fort", is an American former professional baseball catcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies, and St. Louis Cardinals. High school and college McKenry attended Cedar Bluff Middle School, Farragut High School, and Middle Tennessee State University. International career McKenry was originally named to the USA roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup, but was injured and replaced by Lucas May before the tournament began. Fleet Fort
The Fleet Model 60K Fort was the only aircraft designed and built by Canadians during the Second World War and was also the first all-metal monoplane built by Fleet Aircraft of Canada (Fort Erie). It was intended to be an intermediate trainer employed for pilot training between the de Havilland Tiger Moth primary trainer and the North American Harvard advanced trainer. Although it served with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, the Fort was redundant and was used to train wireless (radio) operators and had a relatively short operational career. Design and development The Fort was originally designed as an advanced flying trainer and in 1940 orders were placed for 200 to be built for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. New England Revolution
The New England Revolution is an American professional soccer club based in the Greater Boston area that competes in Major League Soccer (MLS), in the Eastern Conference of the league. It is one of the ten charter clubs of MLS, having competed in the league since its inaugural season. The club is owned by Robert Kraft, who also owns the New England Patriots along with his son, Jonathan Kraft. The name "Revolution" refers to the New England region's significant involvement in the American Revolution that took place from 1775 to 1783. The Fort (North Lewisburg, Ohio)
The Fort is a prominent historic house in the central portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. Located northeast of the village of North Lewisburg in Union County, this two-story brick building is a local landmark.Owen, Lorrie K., ed. ''Dictionary of Ohio Historic Places''. Vol. 2. St. Clair Shores: Somerset, 1999, 1363. Built in 1877, it is a square structure, measuring five bays wide on each of its sides. Its foundation is built of ashlar stone, while the hip roof is constructed of imbricated slates of multiple colors. The house's hilltop location makes it visible from a vast distance in all directions. Many of its impressive Italianate architectural elements, such as the ornamental cornice and carven stone lintels, can be distinguished from far away, especially as the house is surrounded by farmland rather than woods. The Fort (Taft, California)
The Fort is a government building located at the intersection of Ash and Lincoln Sts. in Taft, California. The building is a replica of Sutter's Fort in Sacramento. The property is surrounded by tall adobe walls with large wooden entrance gates; the interior has a main building surrounded by a courtyard and several smaller offices. The Fort was built by the Works Progress Administration from 1938 to 1940 and was one of the largest WPA buildings constructed in the San Joaquin Valley. The buildings at The Fort have been used for government offices at the federal, state, and local levels. The Fort was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 22, 1981. Glasgow Fort is a large out-of-town shopping and leisure park located in Glasgow, Scotland, just off Junction 10 of the M8 motorway which runs to the south, surrounded by the residential areas of Provanhall, Garthamlock and Easterhouse. It was opened in 2004, built on land which had been part of ''Auchinlea Park'' (previously the site of two quarries) which still exists to its immediate east. Description The concept is unusual when compared to other local out-of-town shopping centres such as Braehead and Silverburn, in that it is uncovered and therefore the spaces between units are open to the elements, therefore technically categorising it as a retail park. The design of the area incorporates a "two-sided mall design" intended to recreate a traditional high street.
