Franz Osten
Franz Osten (23 December 1876 in Munich – 2 December 1956) was a Bavaria, Bavarian filmmaker who along with Himansu Rai was among the first retainers of Bombay Talkies. Osten partnered with Rai on a number of India's earliest blockbuster films like ''Achhut Kanya'' and ''Jeevan Naiya''. Early life Osten was born Franz Ostermayr in Munich on 23 December 1876. He trained to be a photographer like his father and gave acting a try. In 1907, he founded a traveling cinema called the "Original Physograph Company" with his brother Peter Ostermayr, who later established the predecessor to Bavaria Film Studios, today one of Germany's largest film studios. Amongst other films, he showed ''Life in India'', a short documentary film about the Munich carnival. The run was not very successful: three days after the opening, the Movie projector, projector exploded in flames. Osten decided to make films and in 1911 directed his first feature, ''Erna Valeska''. Franz Planer
Franz F. Planer, A.S.C. (29 March 1894 as František Plánička – 10 January 1963) was an Austrian-born cinematographer born in Karlsbad, Austria-Hungary (now Czech Republic). Biography The Planer family was very influential, and owned large tracts of farmland, businesses, libraries, and shops in Austria-Hungary, and several properties in and around Vienna, some of which were stolen by certain low ranking officers for their own families' use in the mid to late 1930s, using falsely issued papers and threats. Planer had trained as a portrait painter, but realizing that photography was becoming very popular, and would replace the requirement for talented artists changed his career path. He changed direction into films, and thus began his career as a director of photography for films in Germany and later throughout Europe in the early 1900s until 1933, In 1937, he left the failing Austrian film industry, to begin work in Hollywood. Franz Paul Koch (1 September 1898 in Munich - 28 April 1959) was a German cinematographer. In 1913, Koch was hired in a production of the Munich film pioneer Peter Ostermayr, and over the years he learned his trade as a cameraman. In 1920 he made his first film as chief cameraman for the company ''Emelka''. Koch also worked for other film companies in Munich, where he collaborated frequently with the local directors Franz Osten and Franz Seitz. He was the cinematographer for many Ludwig Ganghofer adaptions, film comedies and dramas and was also involved in the propaganda films '' SA-Mann Brand'' and Leni Riefenstahl's '' Triumph des Willens''. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience.
