The 1972 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (officially the Segundo Campeonato Brasileiro de Clubes) was the 16th edition of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Overview The championship had 26 teams, and Palmeiras won the championship. The championship had four phases. *The First Phase saw the twenty-six teams divided into four groups: two groups of six, and two groups of seven. Despite being divided into groups, the phase was contested in a single round-robin format, with each team playing the others once. The 2016 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A was the 60th season of the Série A, the top level of professional football in Brazil, and the 13th edition in a double round-robin since its establishment in 2003. The season began on 15 May 2016 and ended on 11 December 2016. Fixtures for the 2016 season were announced on 25 April 2016. Palmeiras won the title, their ninth overall.
