The sport of football in the country of Jordan is run by the Jordan Football Association. The association administers the national football team as well as the Jordan League. Football is the most popular sport in the country. History Football in Jordan was introduced during the time of the Ottoman Empire, when Jordan/ Transjordan was part of that empire. Similar to many countries in the world, Jordan (as part of Ottoman Empire) enjoyed their first football development brought by British sailors and merchants; however under autocratic rule of Abdul Hamid II, football was forbidden and it was not until 1908 that football became popular. Following the British occupation after the World War I, football, which was introduced by the British, increased its popularity in Transjordan, and the Jordanian Pro League was founded at 1944. The Jordan Football Association ( ar, الاتحاد الأردني لكرة القدم) is the governing body for football in Jordan. The JFA was awarded best association of the AFC in 2013. History Tournaments Jordan is known to be the Dark Horse of Asian Football, They were one play-off away from reaching the 2014 FIFA World Cup, they lost to Uruguay in a two-legged play-off. The most recent tournament they played was the 2019 AFC Asian Cup where they lost to Vietnam on Penalties in the Round of 16. The farthest Jordan got in the AFC Asian Cup was in 2004 and 2011, reaching the quarter-finals both times as they were paired with Asian Powerhouses such as Japan & South Korea, however, as an underdog they exceeded expectations and made it past the group stages. Branko Smiljanić (born 27 September 1957) is a Serbian football manager and former footballer. Playing career In 1978, he signed a one-year contract with Mercator Ljubljana. He moved to OFK Beograd in 1979. In 1981, he signed a long-term contract with FK Sloboda Užice. He first moved out of Serbia in 1983 to Sweden where he signed a contract with Kalmar AIK FK.
