Adrian Flook
Adrian John Flook (born 9 July 1963) is a British Conservative politician, and a former Member of Parliament (MP). Early life Flook was educated at King Edward School, Bath and Mansfield College, Oxford where he studied (BA) Modern History. He was a stockbroker from 1985 to 1998, working first for UBS Warburg and then for Société Générale. From 1998 to 2002 he worked as a consultant for Financial Dynamics. Parliamentary career At the 1997 general election, he stood unsuccessfully in the safe Labour Party constituency of Pontefract and Castleford. At the 2001 general election, he was elected as MP for Taunton, taking the traditionally Conservative seat that had been captured by the Liberal Democrat Jackie Ballard at the 1997 election. Flook's victory in Taunton was one of just nine total gains made by the Conservative Party at the 2001 General Election where, under William Hague's leadership, the Party made a net gain of just one seat in the House of Commons. Maria Flook is an American writer of fiction and non-fiction. She is currently Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at Emerson College in Boston. She won the 2007 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Award. Works She is the author of the nonfiction books, ''My Sister Life: The Story of My Sister's Disappearance'', (Pantheon, 1998) and New York Times Best Seller ''Invisible Eden: A Story of Love and Murder on Cape Cod'' (Broadway Books, 2003). Flook (app)
Flook was a location-based browsing application and website developed by Ambient Industries located in the United Kingdom, initially for the iPhone. Users of the application created virtual cards, or "Flooks", which were made up of a photo of a particular location and a small piece of text describing that location. These Flooks were then recorded with their geographic coordinates so that other Flook users could see where they have been posted when they are using the app. Users typically upload local secrets, places to go and things to see. The application was therefore a wiki of sorts, but was also a combination of Google Maps, StumbleUpon and review websites such as Tripadvisor or Toptable. Flook (band)
Flook is an Anglo-Irish band playing traditional-style instrumental music, much of it penned by the band themselves. Their music is typified by extremely fast, sometimes percussive, flute and whistle atop complex guitar and bodhrán rhythms. Flook is made up of Brian Finnegan, Sarah Allen, Ed Boyd and John Joe Kelly. History The band was formed in 1995, originally by Becky Morris, with three flute-playing friends Sarah Allen, Brian Finnegan and Michael McGoldrick, (who left in 1997 to join Capercaillie). The band was briefly known as Three Nations Flutes. Flook's 10th anniversary tour included a concert at the Purcell Room (on 7 November 2005) as part of a week of "Folk in the Fall" on London's South Bank and another at the new Sage Gateshead concert hall on the south bank of the River Tyne on 10 November 2005. ''Flook'' was a British comic strip which ran from 1949 to 1984 in the '' Daily Mail'' newspaper. It was drawn by Wally Fawkes (of the jazz group Wally Fawkes and the Troglodytes), who signed the strips as "Trog". It was the first newspaper comic strip to be published by the New Zealand newspaper '' Otago Daily Times'', where it ran from 1952 to 1979. Characters and story The central characters were a young boy called Rufus and his magical animal friend, Flook. According to the strip 'The Coming of Flook', which forms part of the cartoon book ''Rufus and Flook v. Moses Maggot'', we learn that Flook, who vaguely resembled a furry pig walking on his hind legs, was a creature from the age of the dinosaurs whom Rufus, in a dream, rescued from cavemen and who then came back to waking reality with him.
