Five In A Row (1982 Song)
"Five in a Row" was a song released in advance of the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final to celebrate Kerry's imminent winning of five consecutive titles. ''The Irish Times'' has described it as "infamous". The song's chorus features such lines as: "Five in a row, five in a row, never again will there be five in a row" and "It's hard to believe we've won the five in a row". Kerry, however, had not won the fifth title; they still had a game to play and faced Offaly in the decider. Offaly manager Eugene McGee played the song in his team's dressing room ahead of the game. With Kerry leading by two points approaching the game's conclusion, Séamus Darby scored a critical goal (worth three points) to give Offaly the lead. The referee then blew the final whistle, thus restricting Kerry to just the four. Radio Kerry played the song in September 2018 when the county minor team did what the 1982 team could not. The 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 95th All-Ireland Final and the deciding match of the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, an inter-county Gaelic football tournament for the top teams in Ireland. Eugene McGee (Gaelic Football Manager)
Eugene McGee (16 November 1941 – 5 May 2019) was an Irish Gaelic footballer, manager, trainer, selector, Gaelic games administrator and journalist, who is best known for his time as manager of the Offaly senior football team. McGee guided the Offaly team to success in the 1980, 1981, and 1982 Leinster Senior Football Championship, and to the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship title. McGee was in charge of Ireland when they toured Australia for the 1990 International Rules Series. He was also in charge for the 1987 International Rules Series and Seán McCague was his assistant manager on both occasions. In 2004, McGee was intermediary in a dispute between Offaly's International Rules Series player Ciaran McManus and the Offaly County Board when McManus questioned the selection of a new manager. Séamus Darby
Séamus Darby (born 1950, Rhode, County Offaly) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer. Darby is best remembered for scoring an unexpected late goal that deprived Kerry of a 5-in-a-row in the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final. In 2005, it was voted the third greatest moment in GAA history. Playing career During his footballing career, Darby won Leinster Senior Football Championship titles with Offaly in 1972, 1973 and 1982, playing in various forward positions. He won his second All-Ireland medal in 1972 when Offaly defeated Kerry in the final. He had been an unused substitute in the 1971 final v Galway, Offaly's first-ever win. Radio Kerry is a full-service, licensed radio station that operates from the franchise area of County Kerry in Southwest Ireland. Radio Kerry was established in 1989 and began broadcasting on 14 July 1990. The station headquarters are in Tralee, the principal town of County Kerry, with a remote studio in Killarney. The original studios were based at Park View, Tralee, New Street, Killarney and The Barracks, Cahersiveen. In April 1995, Radio Kerry HQ moved to a custom-designed building in Tralee town centre with digital broadcasting, production and editing facilities incorporating a television studio. ''Players of the Faithful'' is a documentary on Offaly's bid to stop Kerry becoming the first team to win five consecutive All-Ireland Senior Football Championships in 1982. Loosehorse were responsible for putting it together; it followed on from their documentary ''Micko'' which debuted earlier that year. It first aired on RTÉ One on Friday 28 December 2018 at 9:30 pm. The 2019 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final was the 132nd final of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship and the culmination of the 2019 tournament, the top level of competition in Gaelic football. 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 96th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 9 May 1982 and ended on 19 September 1982. It was the last year to date that a Kilkenny team played in the Leinster championship. Kerry were the defending champions and were hoping to win a record-breaking fifth successive championship title. Kerry qualified for the final. On 19 September 1982, Offaly won the championship following a 1-15 to 0-17 defeat of Kerry in one of the most dramatic and iconic All-Ireland finals in the history of the championship.
