Robeson County, North Carolina
Robeson County is a county in the southern part of the U.S. state of North Carolina and is its largest county by land area. Its county seat is and largest city is Lumberton. The county was formed in 1787 from part of Bladen County and named in honor of Thomas Robeson, a colonel who had led Patriot forces in the area during the Revolutionary War. As of the 2020 census, the county's population was 116,530. It is a majority-minority county; its residents are approximately 38 percent Native American, 22 percent white, 22 percent black, and 10 percent Hispanic. It is included in the Fayetteville–Lumberton–Laurinburg, NC Combined Statistical Area. The state-recognized Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is headquartered in Pembroke. The area eventually comprising Robeson was originally inhabited by Native Americans, though little is known about them. North Carolina Highway 904 (NC 904) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Description NC 904 is a east–west highway (physically running northwest–southeast) that travels from NC 130 in Five Forks, to East First Street in Ocean Isle Beach. It passes through Brunswick, Columbus, and Robeson Counties. History Established in 1937 as a renumbering of NC 761 when it was extended into South Carolina, south of Tabor City, continuing as SC 904. Around 1951, US 701 was rerouted at Tabor City, replacing NC 904 into South Carolina; its former alignment became an extension of NC 410. Fairmont, North Carolina
Fairmont is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,663 at the 2010 Census. History Fairmont was originally known as Ashpole in homage to the nearby Ashpole Swamp. It was incorporated as Union City in 1899, but the name was changed back to Ashpole in 1901. Six years later the name was changed to Fairmont. The first settlers to this area received land grants from the Lords Proprietors and worked in the logging and naval stores industries producing lumber, turpentine and pitch for ships. The Bufort County Lumber Company opened in the northern section of town in the late 1890s employing 300 men and becoming one of the largest lumber companies in the south. By the late 19th century, a thriving tobacco market had been established as well. The railroads later followed to rapidly move these goods.
