Fisher's Fundamental Theorem Of Natural Selection
Fisher's fundamental theorem of natural selection is an idea about genetic variance in population genetics developed by the statistician and evolutionary biologist Ronald Fisher. The proper way of applying the abstract mathematics of the theorem to actual biology has been a matter of some debate. It states: :"The rate of increase in fitness of any organism at any time is equal to its genetic variance in fitness at that time." Or in more modern terminology: :"The rate of increase in the mean fitness of any organism, at any time, that is ascribable to natural selection acting through changes in gene frequencies, is exactly equal to its genetic variance in fitness at that time". Genetic variance is a concept outlined by the England, English biologist and statistics, statistician Ronald Fisher in his Fisher's fundamental theorem of natural selection, fundamental theorem of natural selection. In his 1930 book ''The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection'', Fisher postulates that the rate of change of fitness (biology), biological fitness can be calculated by the genetic variance of the fitness itself. Sewall Green Wright FRS(For) Honorary FRSE (December 21, 1889March 3, 1988) was an American geneticist known for his influential work on evolutionary theory and also for his work on path analysis. He was a founder of population genetics alongside Ronald Fisher and J. B. S. Haldane, which was a major step in the development of the modern synthesis combining genetics with evolution. He discovered the inbreeding coefficient and methods of computing it in pedigree animals. He extended this work to populations, computing the amount of inbreeding between members of populations as a result of random genetic drift, and along with Fisher he pioneered methods for computing the distribution of gene frequencies among populations as a result of the interaction of natural selection, mutation, migration and genetic drift.
