First Lady of Uruguay (Spanish: ''Primera Dama de Uruguay'') is the unofficial and protocol title of the wife of the President of Uruguay, and hostess of Suarez Residence. The first lady is not an elected position, carries no official duties and brings no salary, but is traditionally responsible for directing and coordinating activities in the social field of the presidency and also accompany the president in ceremonies or official activities. The current first lady is Lorena Ponce de León, wife of Luis Lacalle Pou, who took office on 1 March 2020. Coat Of Arms Of Uruguay
The coat of arms of Uruguay or Uruguayan shield (Spanish language, Spanish: ''Escudo de Armas del Estado'') was first adopted by law on March 19, 1829, and later on had some minor modification in 1906 and 1908. It was supposedly designed by Juan Manuel Besnes Irigoyen (1788–1865). Description It consists of an oval shield, which is divided into four equal sections and crowned by a rising golden sun, the “''Sun of May''”, symbolizing the rising of the Uruguayan nation and the May Revolution. The oval is surrounded by a Laurel wreath, laurel branch on the left and an olive one on the right, representing honor and peace, joined at the bottom by a light blue ribbon, the former uruguayan Cockade of Uruguay, cockade. Venancio Flores
Venancio Flores Barrios (18 May 1808 – 19 February 1868) was a Uruguayan political leader and general. Flores was President of Uruguay from 1854 to 1855 (interim) and from 1865 to 1868. Background and early career In 1839, he was made political chief of the department of San José. He fought in the "Guerra Grande" against Manuel Oribe and his Argentine backers. Máximo Benito Santos Barbosa (15 April 1847 – 19 May 1889) was a Uruguayan political and military figure. Lorenzo Latorre, full name Lorenzo Antonio Inocencio Latorre Jampen, (8 July 1844 – 18 January 1916) was a Uruguayan officer and politician, who was a dictator and President of Uruguay from 10 March 1876 until 15 March 1880. During his rule political opponents were oppressed, but at the same time, his reforms greatly improved the economy and state institutions.
