First Congregational Church (Pittston, Maine)
The Old Pittston Congregational Church (also previously known as the First Congregational Church of Pittston) is a historic church building on Pittston School Street in Pittston, Maine. Built in 1836, it is an architecturally distinctive blend of Federal, Greek Revival, and Gothic Revival architecture, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The congregation, organized in 1812 by Major Reuben Colburn, now meets at 21 Arnold Road. It is affiliated with the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference. Description and history The Old Pittston Congregational Church stands in a small crossroads village south of the main village of Pittston. It is located on the east side of Pittston School Street (a former alignment of Maine State Route 27), just north of its junction with East Pittston Road (Maine State Route 194), and northeast of that road's junction with the current alignment of SR 27. State Route 27 (abbreviated SR 27) is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways, running from the village of Newagen in Southport at SR 238 to the Coburn Gore-Woburn Border Crossing, where it continues into Quebec as Route 161. SR 27 passes through the major cities, towns, and villages of Boothbay Harbor, Wiscasset, Gardiner, Augusta, the Belgrade Lakes Region, Farmington, Kingfield, and Eustis. Route description SR 27 begins at SR 238 in Southport and heads northeast to the town of Boothbay Harbor. Major Reuben Colburn House
The Major Reuben Colburn House is a historic house museum and state historic site on Arnold Road in Pittston, Maine. Built in 1765, it was the home of Reuben Colburn, a patriot and shipbuilder, from 1765 to 1818. The house, one of the first to be built in the area, is most notable as one of the staging area's for Benedict Arnold's 1775 Quebec expedition. It is operated by the state as the Colburn House State Historic Site, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Description The Colburn House stands on a rise overlooking the Kennebec River to the west. Maine State Route 194
State Route 194 (SR 194) is a numbered state highway in the U.S. state of Maine. The route runs from an intersection with SR 27 in Pittston to an intersection with SR 215 in North Newcastle, a village of Newcastle. The state route has one major junction with SR 218 in the town of Whitefield. History SR 194 was designated in 1925 and originally ran from New England Interstate Route 24 (now U.S. Route 1) in Easton, a town in Aroostook County, and the Canadian border. In the 1930s, SR 194 was decommissioned, and the border crossing became one of the few in Maine to not have an assigned route number. After the original route was decommissioned, SR 194 was assigned to a short road located entirely in the town of Rockport. In 1948, SR 194 was decommissioned again when the road was designated part of the new SR 90. SR 194 was assigned to its current alignment in 1951. Benedict Arnold's Expedition To Quebec
In September 1775, early in the American Revolutionary War, Colonel Benedict Arnold led a force of 1,100 Continental Army troops on an expedition from Cambridge in the Province of Massachusetts Bay to the gates of Quebec City. The expedition was part of a two-pronged invasion of the British Province of Quebec, and passed through the wilderness of what is now Maine. The other expedition invaded Quebec from Lake Champlain, led by Richard Montgomery. Unanticipated problems beset the expedition as soon as it left the last significant colonial outposts in Maine. The portages up the Kennebec River proved grueling, and the boats frequently leaked, ruining gunpowder and spoiling food supplies. More than a third of the men turned back before reaching the height of land between the Kennebec and Chaudière rivers.
