Christian Science was founded in the 19th century in Lynn, Massachusetts, by Mary Baker Eddy with the publication of her book '' Science and Health'' (1875). The First Church of Christ, Scientist, is located in the 13.5-acre Christian Science Plaza in Boston, Massachusetts. The center is owned by the church and contains the Original Mother Church (1894); Mother Church Extension (1906); Christian Science Publishing House (1934), which houses the Mary Baker Eddy Library; Reflection Hall (1971); Administration Building (1972); and Colonnade Building (1972). The former First Church of Christ, Scientist is a historic Christian Science church building located at 440 Elm Avenue, Long Beach, California, United States. Built in 1913, it was designed in the Classical Revival-style of architecture by noted Los Angeles architect Elmer Grey. The Long Beach city ordinance designating First Church of Christ, Scientist former building at 440 Elm Avenue as ''Historic Landmark'' No. 16.52.580 stated that: "First Church of Christ Scientist was Long Beach's first Christian Science Church. As such, it established an important religious institution in this city. Additionally, this church was one of the few downtown churches to survive the 1933 earthquake relatively undamaged and, therefore, is one of the oldest churches in Long Beach." The former First Church of Christ, Scientist, is an historic Christian Science church building located at 700 22nd Street, Rock Island, Illinois, United States. Designed by architect William C. Jones of Chicago in the Palladian style, it was built between 1914-1915. Its exterior walls are of brick covered by Bedford limestone. Its superimposed front portico is supported by six 2 story columns with egg-and-dart capitals. Its dome actually consists of 2 domes: an outer dome and an inner dome which are separated by a space for lighting fixtures and maintenance. The inner dome consists of some 8,000 colored fish scale glass panes on a wooden support structure. The inner dome is similar to the inner dome of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Kalamazoo, Michigan, which was designed by William C. Jones in 1913. The former First Church of Christ, Scientist, built in 1897, is a historic Neo-Classical-style church located at 4017 S. Drexel Boulevard in Chicago, Illinois. It was designed by noted Chicago-based architect Solon Spencer Beman, who was renowned for the churches and other buildings that he designed in the United States. In 1923 an Aeolian-Skinner organ was installed in the church. On May 7, 1950, Grant Memorial AME Church bought the building and is its present owner. First Church of Christ, Scientist is the main congregation for Atlanta, Georgia’s Christian Science community. Its historic Greek revival church edifice is located on the corner of Fifteenth Street, N.E., and Peachtree Street in the city's Midtown section and is a contributing property in the Ansley Park Historic District. The church was opened in 1914, replacing a smaller church building at 17 West Baker Street, where services were held since 1899. The church's architect, Arthur Neal Robinson with Edward Emmett Dougherty's firm, was also a congregant. The church claims to be the first air-conditioned building in Atlanta, having used a primitive system of involving fans blowing over blocks of ice placed in the passages beneath the floor of the main auditorium. Current status First Church of Christ, Scientist, sold the building in 2013 for $6.25 million. It was resold in Nov. 2014 for $14.25 million. In September 2015, the current owner received the city's Urban Development Review Board's approval for use of the church building "for commercial uses, topped by a large garage next door to a brand new 38-story residential tower." The Historic Derby Street Chapel, also known as Derby Street Chapel, is a historic church building located at 121 Derby Street in Cocoa, Brevard County, Florida.
