Fire-retardant Fabric
Fire-retardant fabrics are textiles that are more resistant to fire than others through chemical treatment of flame-retardant or manufactured fireproof fibers. Properties The term ''fire-retardant'' as applied to organic (i.e., containing carbon) materials, is intended to refer to ''reduced'' fire hazard, as all will burn under certain circumstances. The tests used specified in building codes, such as NFPA 701, are more correctly ''flame resistance'' tests, which test a fabric's ability to resist ignition with the flame size and duration in the test conditions. The result is a comparative test, which provides a measure of the material's resistance to propagating combustion caused by small scale ignition sources. These tests do not predict the burning characteristics of full scale hazards. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is an international nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards. As of 2018, the NFPA claims to have 50,000 members and 9,000 volunteers working with the organization through its 250 technical committees. History In 1895, a Committee on Automatic Sprinkler Protection was formed in Massachusetts by men affiliated with several fire insurance companies and a pipe manufacturer to develop a uniform standard for the design and installation of fire sprinkler systems. Fire prevention is a function of many fire departments. The goal of fire prevention is to educate the public on the precautions which should be taken to prevent potentially harmful fires and how to survive these fires in the event that they do occur. It is a proactive method of preventing fire-based emergencies and reducing the damage caused by them. Many fire departments have one or more Fire Prevention Officers, which may also be a routine duty of firefighters. Polybenzimidazole Fiber
Polybenzimidazole (PBI, short for poly ,2’-(''m''-phenylen)-5,5’-bisbenzimidazole'') fiber is a synthetic fiber with a very high decomposition temperature. It does not exhibit a melting point, it has exceptional thermal and chemical stability, and it does not readily ignite. It was first discovered by American polymer chemist Carl Shipp Marvel in the pursuit of new materials with superior stability, retention of stiffness, toughness at elevated temperature. Marlan (fabric)
Marlan is a registered trademark for inherent flame retardant fabric (UNE EN 11612) used in protective clothing for foundries. It was developed in 1997 and marketed by Marina Textil since 1998 conceived to protect against molten metal splashes including aluminium, cryolite, iron, steel, copper, magnesium, glass etc. Marlan is a blend of different fibers, which includes wool and FR (flame retardant) cellulose fiber. Properties The fabric is inherent meaning that the protection is not reduced through continuous use or washing and its properties remain unalterable throughout its life. The characteristics of the natural fibers give inherent protection and comfort. Flame
A flame (from Latin ''flamma'') is the visible, gaseous part of a fire. It is caused by a highly exothermic chemical reaction taking place in a thin zone. When flames are hot enough to have ionized gaseous components of sufficient density they are then considered plasma. Mechanism Color and temperature of a flame are dependent on the type of fuel involved in the combustion, as, for example, when a lighter is held to a candle. The applied heat causes the fuel molecules in the candle wax to vaporize (if this process happens in inert atmosphere without oxidizer, it is called pyrolysis). In this state they can then readily react with oxygen in the air, which gives off enough heat in the subsequent exothermic reaction to vaporize yet more fuel, thus sustaining a consistent flame.
