''Fire, Water, and Trumpets'' (russian: Огонь, вода и… медные трубы, ''Ogon', voda i... mednye truby'') is a 1968 Soviet Union, Soviet fantasy film directed by Aleksandr Rou. Its story and characters are derived from Slavic folklore. Plot There exists a Russian idiom, "to go through fire, water and trumpets" (пройти огонь, воду и медные трубы) meaning approximately "to go to hell and back"; in other words, to persevere in the face of extreme adversity. The young collier Vasya goes into the forest to collect firewood. In a clearing he spies the lovely Alyonushka grazing her goat Byelochka. As soon as he has fallen in love with the girl, werewolves appear and kidnap her to deliver to the wicked Koshchei. Alexander Arturovich Rou (also, Rowe, from his Irish father's name) (russian: Александр Артурович Роу, – 28 December 1973) was a Soviet Union, Soviet film director, and People's Artist of the RSFSR (1968). He directed a number of children's Fantasy film, fantasy films, based mostly on Folklore of Russia, Russian folklore, that were highly popular and often imitated in the Soviet Union. Baba Yaga
In Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga, also spelled Baba Jaga (from Polish), is a supernatural being (or one of a trio of sisters of the same name) who appears as a deformed and/or ferocious-looking woman. In fairy tales Baba Yaga flies around in a mortar, wields a pestle, and dwells deep in the forest in a hut usually described as standing on chicken legs. In Slavic mythology, vodyanoy or vodyanoi ( rus, водяно́й, p=vədʲɪˈnoj; lit. ' efrom the water' or 'watery') is a water spirit. In Czech and Slovak fairy tales, it is called ''vodník'' (or in Germanized form: ), and it is considered to be the equivalent creature as the Wassermann or nix of German fairy tales. Pavel Pavlovich Pavlenko (russian: Павел Павлович Павленко) (20 September 1902 – 9 March 1993) was a Soviet stage and film actor. Life Born in Kiev, he later moved to Moscow and graduated in 1919 from the Moscow City Theatrical School named for Anatoly Lunacharsky. He tried to join the Moscow Operetta, but was rejected by Grigory Yaron, who said, "We do not need a second Yaron!" He debuted on the stage in 1920. He worked in the Moscow Ukrainian Theater, in the Children's Theater, and elsewhere. During the Great Patriotic War, he played in the Mossovet Theatre. After the war, he appeared more frequently in films, and was a favorite of Aleksandr Rou. His film career came to an end in the late seventies. He died in obscurity in Moscow in 1993. Aleksei Makarovich Smirnov (russian: Алексей Макарович Смирнов; 28 February 1920 in Danilov – 7 May 1979 in Leningrad) was a Soviet and Russian theater and film actor. Early life Aleksei Smirnov was born on 28 February 1920, in the town of Danilov, Yaroslavl Oblast, to the Smirnov family: Makar Stepanovich Smirnov and Anna Ivanovna. In the mid-1920s they moved to Leningrad. After her husband's early death Anna Ivanovna had to raise her two children on her own - Aleksei had a younger brother Arkady. The Smirnovs resided in a communal apartment at 44 Petr Lavrov str. As a pupil, Aleksei Smirnov began acting in the school amateur theatre. Musa Viktorovna Krepkogorskaya (russian: Муза Викторовна Крепкогорская; July 9, 1924, Moscow — June 26, 1999, Moscow) was a Soviet and Russian theater and film actress, Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1989). Wife of actor Georgi Yumatov. They met at VGIK during the 1940s and lived together up till Yumatov's death. Krepkogorskaya was never as popular as her husband, even though he made sure that she was given at least minor roles in every movie he appeared in. Muza Krepkogorskaya died on June 26, 1999.
