Filomeno Da Paixão De Jesus
Brigadier General Filomeno da Paixão de Jesus (born 27 March 1953) is an East Timorese politician and former senior officer in the Timor Leste Defence Force (F-FDTL). He is the Minister for Defence, serving since July 2018 under the VIII Constitutional Government of East Timor led by Taur Matan Ruak. From October 2011 to July 2018, he was the Deputy Chief of the F-FDTL. Early life and career Filomeno was born in Bobonaro, in the western part (which is known as ) of the then Portuguese Timor. In 1973, he graduated from the Liceu Dr. Francisco Machado after completing seven years of secondary education. From September 1971 to August 1975, Filomeno worked in the colonial financial administration of Portuguese Timor. In 1974, he was one of the founders of the Timorese Social Democratic Association (ASDT), which, in September 1975, renamed itself Fretilin. Liquiçá District
Liquiçá (Tetum: ''Likisá'') is a coastal city in East Timor, 32 km to the west of Dili, the national capital. Liquiçá is the capital of Liquiçá District. The city has a population of 5,005 inhabitants. History A part of the colonial administration of East Timor was arrested in Maubara and Liquiçá during the Japanese occupation of East Timor from 1942 - 1945. As a consequence the two towns where spared from the air raids which devastated the rest of the island. 2008 East Timorese Assassination Attempts
Rebel soldiers of the Timor Leste Defence Force invaded the homes of the President and Prime Minister of East Timor on 11 February 2008, leading to the shooting and serious wounding of President José Ramos-Horta and the shooting up of the car of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. Two rebel soldiers, including leader Alfredo Reinado, were shot dead by presidential security forces. Reinado had deserted the military in 2006 along with 600 others after complaining of regional discrimination in promotions, sparking the 2006 East Timorese crisis. The attacks have been variously interpreted as attempted assassinations, attempted kidnappings and an attempted coup d'état. The rebels' intentions remain unknown. Gastão Salsinha
Lieutenant Gastão Salsinha was the de facto leader of the East Timor rebel movement following the death of former leader Major Alfredo Reinado. Earlier background Salsinha was a member of the East Timorese resistance force, FALINTIL, during the Indonesian occupation until 1999. Following the achievement of independence in 2002 he became a Lieutenant in the new Timor Leste Defence Force, the F-FDTL, and trained under the Australian Defence Force. Factional activities and support On 4 May 2006, he deserted the F-FDTL with rebel leader Major Alfredo Reinado and others claiming political discrimination within the armed forces. He initially led the rebel movement but was later an active leader serving under Reinado to oppose the elected government claiming that it fell short of the ideals of the independence movement and that the struggle for "true independence" must continue.
