Filippo Strozzi The Elder
Filippo Strozzi the Elder (4 July 1428 – 14 May 1491) was an Italian banker and statesman, a member of the affluent Strozzi family of Florence. He was born in Florence to Matteo Strozzi (son of Simone Strozzi and Andreina Rondinelli) and Alessandra Macinghi (daughter of Filippo Macinghi). He was banned by the Medici as a young man, together with all his family, due to the opposition of Palla Strozzi against Cosimo de' Medici. He moved to Naples, and here he gained a renowned status as a banker. When he returned to Florence he commissioned Benedetto da Maiano for the construction of the famous family palace; however, he died before the completion of the works, in 1534. He also had Maiano, along with Filippino Lippi, build a notable chapel in the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella. Completed in 1502, it houses Strozzi's remains. Filippo Strozzi the Younger (January 4, 1489 – December 18, 1538) was a Florentine banker, and the most famous member of the Strozzi family in the Renaissance. He is best remembered as a tragic hero and defender of the lost Florentine republic against the Medici dukes – yet this is almost entirely a nineteenth-century fiction of nationalist historians and dramatists. He had been one of the staunchest supporters of the House of Medici in Florence and Rome. Filippo di Piero Strozzi ( French: ''Philippe Strozzi''; 1541 – 27 July 1582) was an Italian condottiero, a member of the Florentine family of the Strozzi. He fought mainly for France. Biography He was born in Florence to Piero Strozzi and Laudomia de' Medici. His father had been exiled from his native city, and had been received in France by Queen Catherine de' Medici, being appointed as Marshal of France. Filippo became page of the future king Francis II. In 1557 Strozzi entered the French army. Starting from first battles in Piedmont, he fought in numerous of the battles of the 16th century. In 1558 he took part to the siege of Calais against England - his father was killed soon afterwards at the Siege of Thionville.
