Fiji At The 1988 Winter Olympics
Fiji sent a delegation to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada from 13–28 February 1988. This was their debut appearance at a Winter Olympic Games. The sole athlete sent by Fiji to Calgary was Rusiate Rogoyawa, in cross-country skiing. In the 15 kilometre classical race, he finished in 83rd place. Background The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee was recognised by the International Olympic Committee on 31 December 1954. They made their first Olympic appearance at the 1956 Summer Olympics, and with two exceptions, have participated at every Summer Olympic Games since; they missed the 1964 edition, and boycotted the 1980 Games. The 1980 Summer Olympics (russian: Летние Олимпийские игры 1980, Letniye Olimpiyskiye igry 1980), officially known as the Games of the XXII Olympiad (russian: Игры XXII Олимпиады, Igry XXII Olimpiady) and commonly known as Moscow 1980 (russian: link=no, Москва 1980), were an international multi-sport event held from 19 July to 3 August 1980 in Moscow, Soviet Union, in present-day Russia. Mikhail Talgatovich Devyatyarov (russian: Михаи́л Талга́тович Девятья́ров; born 25 February 1959 in Chusovoy) is a former Soviet/Russian cross-country skier who competed from 1982 to 1992, training at Armed Forces sports society in Perm. He took the gold medal in the 15 km classical and the silver medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. The opening ceremony of the 1988 Winter Olympics was held on February 13, 1988, beginning at 1:30 p.m. MST (16:30 UTC, February 13) at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
