Fiji At The 1984 Summer Olympics
Fiji sent a delegation to compete at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States from 28 July to 12 August 1984. This was the nation's sixth appearance at a Summer Olympic Games. Their first appearance was at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Fiji's delegation consisted of fourteen competitors with the most being in Athletics and Sailing with four competitors. Swimming had three, while Judo and Cycling also saw Fiji compete in those sports. Fiji Association Of Sports And National Olympic Committee
The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) was founded on 25 March 1949 and achieved International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition on 20 September 1955. It is responsible for entering Fiji's representatives in the Olympic Games and the coordination and management of Fiji Teams to the South Pacific Mini Games, Pacific Games, South Pacific Games and the Commonwealth Games. The women's individual road race was the first time that a women's cycling event had been included in the Olympic program. The race took place on Sunday July 29, 1984 along the major roads within Mission Viejo, California. There were 45 participants in the race, from 16 nations, with one cyclist who did not finish. Anthony Steven "Tony" Philp MF is a former Windsurfing World Champion and Olympic sailor from Fiji. Currently a Brand Ambas'ador for international outdoor magazine ''The Outdoor Journal'', he is also a consultant for the International Surfing Association. Philp is one of only two Fiji-born athletes, along with golfer Vijay Singh, to be ranked number one in their sports official world ranking list.
