2014–15 Men's FIH Hockey World League Round 1
The 2014–15 Men's FIH Hockey World League Round 1 was held from June to December 2014. A total of 35 teams competing in 7 events were part in this round of the tournament playing for 15 berths in the Round 2, played from January to March 2015. Qualification Each national association member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) had the opportunity to compete in the tournament. Teams ranked 20th and lower in the FIH World Rankings current at the time of seeking entries for the competition were allocated to one of the Round 1 events. Hockey at the Pacific Games (known as the South Pacific Games until 2009) was introduced as a tournament for men's teams in 1979. Hockey was not played again until 2003 when a women's tournament was included in the schedule for Suva. At the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby the format was changed from eleven-a-side to five-a-side, and both men's and women's tournaments were hosted. A penalty shootout is a method used in field hockey to decide which team progresses to the next stage of a tournament (or wins the tournament) following a tied game. Two methods have been used: the original penalty stroke competition is a best-of-five penalty strokes with sudden death if scores were level after five strokes. An alternate penalty shoot-out competition was introduced at major tournaments in 2011. Sometimes known as a penalty shuffle, the method is similar to penalty shots in ice hockey and consists of one-on-ones between an attacking player and a goalkeeper. The 2016–17 Men's FIH Hockey World League Round 2 was held in March and April 2017. A total of 24 teams competing in three events took part in this round of the tournament playing for 8 berths in the 2016–17 Men's FIH Hockey World League Semifinals, Semifinals, played in June and July 2017. Qualification 9 teams ranked between 12th and 20th in the FIH World Rankings current at the time of seeking entries for the competition qualified automatically. However, South Africa men's national field hockey team, South Africa was chosen to host a 2016–17 Men's FIH Hockey World League Semifinals, Semifinal, hence exempt from Round 2 and leaving 8 teams qualified.
