Figure Skating At The 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's Singles
The men's singles was one of four events in figure skating at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Each nation could enter up to 3 skaters.Official Report, p. 39. Sweden's Ulrich Salchow, who had won several World Figure Skating Championships, easily won the gold medal after his main rival, Russia's Nikolai Panin, withdrew either in protest over what he considered unfair judging or due to illness.Official Report, p. 293. Competition format Each skater had to complete a set of compulsory figures, with a possible score from those figures of 264. There were 7 figures, each of which had to completed in both directions (resulting in a total of 14 figures). Each figure was repeated three times. Marks were given for each figure from 0 to 6 (in half-point increments), then multiplied by a difficulty factor for that figure. Ulrich Salchow
Karl Emil Julius Ulrich Salchow (7 August 1877 – 19 April 1949) was a Danish-born Swedish figure skater, who dominated the sport in the first decade of the 20th century. Salchow won the World Figure Skating Championships ten times, from 1901 to 1905, and from 1907 to 1911. This is still a record, which he shares with Sonja Henie who also won 10 titles in the 1920s and 1930s, and with Irina Rodnina who won 10 titles in the 1960s and 1970s. Salchow did not compete in the 1906 World Championships that were held in Munich, as he feared that he would not be judged fairly against Gilbert Fuchs of Germany. When figure skating was first contested at the Summer Olympic Games in London (1908), Salchow also won the title with ease, became one of the oldest figure skating Olympic champions. Figure Skating At The 1908 Summer Olympics
Four figure skating events were contested at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, but they were held in October 1908, six months after most of the other Olympic events at the 1908 Games. The figure skating competition took place at the Prince's Skating Club, in the district of Knightsbridge. It was the first time that a winter sport had ever been included in the Olympic Games, sixteen years before the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix. The number of competitors was very low, with two events having only three entrants, guaranteeing a medal for participation. Henning Grenander
Henning Grenander (4 August 1874–11 March 1958) was a Swedish figure skater. Grenander was born on 4 August 1874 in Skövde, Sweden. He began attending a school in Stockholm when he was 8 and began learning how to skate when he was 11. He won a silver medal at the 1893 European Figure Skating Championships but the results were declared invalid by ISU over issues with the scoring rules. In 1898 he moved to London and worked in a Swedish bank. He won the gold medal at the 1898 World Figure Skating Championships and decided to stay in London after the games. He became a Swedish masseur and became involved with the National Skating Association. He helped plan the 1908 Summer Olympics and was a judge in the men's singles figure skating and men's special figures events. Henry Yglesias
Henry Yglesias (14 May 1867 – 20 August 1949) was a British figure skater. He competed in the men's singles event at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Along with fellow skater Edgar Syers, Yglesias lobbied for the adoption of the international style of skating to become the standard in England. They requested that the International Skating Union hold the third edition of the World Championships in London in 1898. Yglesias was part of the National Skating Association for more than 40 years, becoming a leading judge in skating. He also became a solicitor, and was a partner in the firm Lewis & Yglesias. Richard Johansson (18 June 1882 – 24 July 1952) was a Sweden, Swedish figure skater. He won the silver medal in the men's singles competition at the Figure skating at the 1908 Summer Olympics, 1908 London Olympics. He was part of the Swedish medal sweep there. Horatio Torromé
Horatio Tertuliano Torromé, also credited as Henri Torromé (1861 – 16 September 1920), was a British figure skater who also competed for Argentina. Torromé was born in Rio de Janeiro to an Argentine father and a Brazilian mother, and not long after his birth the family emigrated to London, England, this is where Torromé took up ice skating at his local club which was the Prince's Skating Club in Knightsbridge, London. Torromé competed at the 1902 World Figure Skating Championships in London and he finished in fourth place out of four starters, in 1905 and 1906 he came first at the British Figure Skating Championships. Although Torromé qualified to represent Great Britain at the 1908 Summer Olympics, but he opted to compete for his fathers home country and so becoming the only representative for Argentina at the 1908 Summer Olympics held in London. Isaac Irving Brokaw (March 29, 1871 – March 18, 1939) was an American figure skater, artist, lawyer, and financier. He represented the United States at the 1908 Summer Olympics in the figure skating competition, becoming the first American to compete in a sport included in the Winter Olympic program. After he won an international prize in Switzerland, he brought the International Style of skating back to the United States. His book, "Art of Skating" was known as the figure skater's bible.
