Field Hockey At The 1996 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The women's field hockey tournament at the 1996 Summer Olympics was the 5th edition of the field hockey event for women at the Summer Olympic Games. It was held over a thirteen-day period beginning on 20 July, and culminating with the medal finals on 1 August. Games were played at the Herndon Stadium and the Panther Stadium, both located in Atlanta, United States. Australia won the gold medal for the second time after defeating Korea 3–1 in the final. The Netherlands won the bronze medal by defeating Great Britain 4–3 in the final on penalty strokes after a 0–0 draw. Qualification The previous Olympic and World champions and the host nation received an automatic berth. Along with the five teams qualifying through the Olympic Qualification Tournament, eight teams competed in this tournament. Rechelle Hawkes
Rechelle Margaret Hawkes, (born 30 May 1967 in Albany, Western Australia) is the former captain of the Australian Women's Hockey Team, best known as the ''Hockeyroos'',she was captain for eight years and became the second Australian woman after swimmer Dawn Fraser to win three Olympic gold medals at three separate Olympic Games: Seoul 1988, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Hawkes also competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, where Australia finished fifth. Marcia Pankratz
Marcia Anne Pankratz (born October 1, 1964) is an American former field hockey forward and current head coach for the Michigan Wolverines. Pankratz participated in two Summer Olympics. In 1988 she finished in eighth position with ''Team USA'', in 1996 she claimed the fifth spot. Pankratz had 110 international appearances over the course of her career. Career Playing career Pankratz attended Wakefield High School and the University of Iowa, where she played for the Hawkeyes. She finished her career with 76 goals to rank third among all-time Iowa goal scorers. She was chosen for the NCAA All-Tournament team in 1984 and was part of the first team of the Big Ten All-Decade Team (1981–91).
