At the 1908 Summer Olympics, a field hockey tournament was contested for the first time. Six teams entered the tournament: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany and France. White City Stadium
White City Stadium was a stadium located in White City, London, England. Built for the 1908 Summer Olympics, it hosted the finish of the first modern marathon and other sports like swimming, speedway, boxing, show jumping, athletics, stock car racing, concerts and a match at the 1966 World Cup. From 1927, it was a venue for greyhound racing, hosting the English Greyhound Derby until its closure in 1984. The stadium was demolished in 1985 and the site is now occupied by White City Place. History Designed by the engineer J. J. Webster and completed in 10 months by George Wimpey, on part of the site of the Franco-British Exhibition, this stadium with a seating capacity of 68,000 was opened by King Edward VII on 27 April 1908 after the first stanchion had been placed in position by Lady Desborough on 2 August 1907. Carl Ebert (field Hockey)
Carl Anton Charles Ebert (20 February 1887 – 14 May 1980), was a Germans, German actor, stage director and arts administrator. Ebert's early career was as an actor, training under Max Reinhardt and becoming one of the leading actors in his native Germany during the 1920s. During that decade he was also appointed to administrative posts, both theatrical and academic. In 1929 he directed opera for the first time, and during the 1930s established a reputation as an operatic director in Germany and beyond. A strong opponent of Nazism, he left Germany in 1933 and did not return until 1945. Together with John Christie (opera manager), John Christie and the conductor Fritz Busch, Ebert created the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1934. Ebert remained its artistic director until 1959, though productions were suspended during the Second World War. Louis Charles Baillon (5 August 1881 – 9 September 1965) was an English field hockey player, who won a gold medal with the Great Britain team at the 1908 Summer Olympics. Personal life Louis Baillon was born in Stanley, Falkland Islands at the house of his grandmother, Julia Williams. His father, Louis Augustine Baillon emigrated to the Falklands in the mid-1800s to become a sheep farmer. In 1888, he and his family returned to England and settled in Northamptonshire. In 1910, Louis married Mildred Isobel Green and they had 5 children together. He then joined the Royal Army Service Corps in 1914 and saw service in France during World War I and later left the army in 1920. After leaving the army, Baillon joined the Phipps Northampton Brewery Company where he rose to the rank of director. Friedrich Wilhelm "Fieten" Rahe (; 16 April 1888 – 18 February 1949) was a German tennis and field hockey player. Biography Rahe was born at Rostock on 16 April 1888 and grew up in the family house in ''Kröpeliner Straße 37''. His grandfather, the entrepreneur ''Friedrich Rehmann'', had founded a company for wholesale trade of food. Rehmann had three daughters of which the eldest, ''Emma'', had married businessman ''Eduard Rahe'', the parents of Friedrich Wilhelm. His family's wealth made it possible for Rahe to focus on leisure activities like playing tennis or driving expensive cars. At an age of 15, he took part in the German national tennis championships at nearby Heiligendamm but lost his initial match. In 1906, at the German open championships, he could reach the final but lost to Josiah Ritchie in straights set, winning only 5 games.
