Fernström Prize
The Fernström Prize ( sv, Fernströmpriset) is a series of annual awards for prominent Swedish and Nordic scientists in medicine. The prize money is donated by the Eric K. Fernström' Foundation. The prizes are managed by the medical faculty at Lund University. Nordic Prize The Nordic Fernström Prize (''Nordiska Fernströmpriset'') is awarded annually to an outstanding Nordic scientist in medicine. Swedes ( sv, svenskar) are a North Germanic ethnic group native to the Nordic region, primarily their nation state of Sweden, who share a common ancestry, culture, history and language. They mostly inhabit Sweden and the other Nordic countries, in particular Finland where they are an officially recognized minority, with a substantial diaspora in other countries, especially the United States. Jan Holmgren
Jan Roland Holmgren (born in Borås, Sweden) is a Swedish physician, microbiologist, immunologist, and vaccinologist, known for his research on cholera and mucosal immunology, specifically, for his leadership in developing "the world's first effective oral cholera vaccine". Biography At the University of Gothenburg (''Göteborgs universitet'' in Swedish), Holmgren graduated in 1965 with a bachelor of medicine degree, in 1969 with a Ph.D., and in 1973 with an M.D. His 1969 doctoral dissertation dealt with immunological aspects of urinary tract infections in children. At the University of Gothenburg, he was appointed in 1969 a docentry and in 1970 an associate professorship. From 1971 to 1980 he held research positions at the Swedish Medical Research Council. Lennart Philipson
Carl Lennart Philipson (July 16, 1929 – June 26, 2011) was a Swedish virologist and professor at Karolinska Institute. He is well known for his research in respiratory viruses and his direction over several research institutions. Career Philipson earned his MD in 1957 and PhD in 1958 at Uppsala University, working with Arne Tiselius. He came to the United States in 1959 to do a postdoc at the Rockefeller University in virology, before returning to Sweden's Uppsala University to establish his own laboratory in 1961 with Jan Pontén. He did two sabbaticals in the United States. In 1971 in the laboratory of Jim Darnell, and in 1977 in the laboratory of David Baltimore. In 1967, he was appointed director of the Wallenberg Laboratory in Sweden. In 1982, he was appointed to be the second director general of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), which he ran until 1993. Arne Holmgren
Arne Holmgren (21 December 1940 — 6 January 2020) was a Swedish biochemist known as a redox pioneer. He studied medicine at Uppsala University in 1962 and became a medical student. He received his Ph.D. in 1968 from the Karolinska Institute (KI) where he became associate professor in 1969, and became a certified doctor in 1974. In the years 1970-1973, Holmgren was a senior lecturer in medical chemistry and 1973-1982 a research lecturer and assistant professor of medical chemistry. He was appointed professor of medical protein chemistry and enzymology at KI in 1983, and in 1991 professor of biochemistry and director of the Department of Biochemistry at the Medical Nobel Institute, KI.
