Fencing At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Women's épée
The women's épée event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 24 July 2021 at the Makuhari Messe. 34 fencers from 18 nations competed. The medals for the competition were presented by Giovanni Malagò, Italy; IOC Member, and the medalists' bouquets were presented by  Donald Anthony Jr., United States; FIE Vice President. Background This will be the 7th appearance of the event, which has been held at every Summer Olympics since 1996. The reigning Olympic champion is Emese Szász of Hungary. The reigning (2019) World Champion is Nathalie Moellhausen of Brazil. Qualification A National Olympic Committee (NOC) could enter up to 3 qualified fencers in the women's épée. Nations were limited to three fencers each from 1996 to 2004. However, the 2008 Games introduced a rotation of women's team fencing events with one weapon left off each Games; the individual event without a corresponding team event had the number of fencers per nation reduced to two. Makuhari Messe
is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba City, in the northwest corner of Chiba Prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. ''Makuhari'' is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair". Lin Sheng (; born 5 January 1994) is a Chinese fencer. Lin is from Fuzhou, Fujian. She won a gold medal in the girls' épée event at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. She was part of the Chinese girls' team which won gold in the team épée event at the 2011 Junior World Fencing Championships. Renata Knapik-Miazga (born 15 July 1988) is a Polish épée fencer, bronze medallist at the 2013 European Fencing Championships. Kelley Hurley (born April 4, 1988) is an American épée fencer. She won the bronze medal in the women's team épée event at the 2012 Summer Olympics. A standout at the University of Notre Dame, she was a 4-time All-American. She has qualified to represent the United States in fencing at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo in 2021.
