These are the results of the women's épée team competition in fencing at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. A total of 33 women from nine nations competed in this event. Competition took place in the Fencing Hall at the Helliniko Olympic Complex on August 20. Tournament results The team competition was a single-elimination tournament A single-elimination, knockout, or sudden death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Helliniko Olympic Complex
The Hellinikon Olympic Complex is a closed, partially demolished sports complex, situated at Hellinikon in the south Athens, approximately 16 kilometres from the Olympic Village. It was built on the site of the former Hellinikon International Airport for the staging of the 2004 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Paralympics. It consists of five separate venues. Venues Hellinikon Indoor Arena The Indoor arena was an arena adjacent to the Fencing Hall. It hosted the Basketball preliminary matches and the Handball finals at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The facility seats 15,000 spectators for basketball, although only 10,700 seats were made publicly available during the Olympics - and seats 13,500 fans for handball - though only 10,300 seats were made publicly available during the games. A single-elimination, knockout, or sudden death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion. Sherraine MacKay
Sherraine Schalm, formerly Sherraine Schalm-MacKay (born June 21, 1975), is a former top-ranked Canadian Olympic épée fencer. She is a World Cup medal winner, elementary school teacher and author. She is a graduate of the University of Ottawa. At the 2005 World Fencing Championships she won a bronze medal in the individual épée event, becoming the first Canadian to ever win a World Championships medal in the sport. The next season, in 2005–06, she won the overall World Cup title. Born in Brooks, Alberta, Schalm has earned the best ever results for any Canadian woman fencer at the world championships, the Olympic Games and is a four-time medallist at the Pan American Games. Ildikó Mincza-Nébald
Ildikó Mincza-Nébald (born 6 December 1969, in Budapest) is a Hungarian épée fencer. Mincza-Nébald won the bronze medal in the individual épée event at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, losing the semi-final 14-15 to Ana Maria Brânză and winning 15-11 against Li Na in the play-off for third place. Monique Kavelaars
Monique Kavelaars (born March 20, 1971) is a Canadian fencer. She was part of Team Canada's women's epée team who finished fourth at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. She trains and lives in Toronto, Ontario. She belongs to the Toronto Fencing Club. Kavelaars was Miss Teen Canada in 1989. She has a twin sister named Ingrid Kavelaars who was runner-up in 1987 at that same pageant, but won Miss Teen London Ontario in 1987 and is currently an actress. They also have an older sister named Annette Kavelaars who won the Miss London Ontario pageant in 1984 and competed in the Miss Canada pageant. Niki-Katerina Sidiropoulou (born 11 April 1974) is a Greek épée fencer and silver medalist at European Fencing Championships. Career As Niké Szidiropulosz, competing with Hungary, Niki-Katerina Sidiropoulou won the silver medal at the World Championships Cadets in 1991 in Foggia, at the Epee Women's U17 Individual event. In 1992 she won the silver medal at the European Championships U20, in Innsbruck, Austria, at the Epee Women's U20 Individual event.
