Fencing At The 1960 Summer Olympics – Women's Foil
The women's foil was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1960 Summer Olympics programme. It was the eighth appearance of the event. The competition was held from 31 August – 1 September 1960. 56 fencers from 24 nations competed. Competition format The competition used a pool play format, with each fencer facing the other fencers in the pool in a round robin. Bouts were to 4 touches. Barrages were used to break ties necessary for advancement. However, only as much fencing was done as was necessary to determine advancement, so some bouts never occurred if the fencers advancing from the pool could be determined. Valentina Rastvorova
Valentyna Ksenofontivna Rastvorova (Валентина Ксенофонтовна Растворова; 17 July 1933 – 24 August 2018) was a Ukrainian who was a Soviet fencer who competed in the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympics in the individual foil and team foil events. She won an individual silver medal and team gold medal in 1960, and a team silver medal in 1964. She also won six gold and two silver medals at the world championships of 1956–67. Biography Personal life She was born in Odesa, Ukraine. In 1956 Rastvorova graduated from the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism. She was married to Boris Grishin, an Olympic water polo player. Their son, Yevgeny Grishin, is an Olympic champion in water polo. Her daughter, Yelena Grishina, made it to the finals of the Olympics in foil in 1992 and 1988. Her grandson, Sergey Bida, is a world champion épée fencer. Irene Camber or Irene Camber-Corno (born 12 February 1926) is an Italian fencer and Olympic champion in foil competition. Biography Camber was born in Trieste, Italy on 12 February 1926. She began to be interested in fencing at eight years-old in Trieste. Her involvement in fencing was not planned, but random. Instead of entering the hall where she used to practice gymnastics, she mistakenly entered the fencing hall. She had four appearances at Olympic Games: London (1948), Helsinki (1952), Rome (1960) and Tokyo (1964). After graduating with a bachelor of science degree in industrial chemistry, she made her debut at the London Games in 1948. She was defeated in the semi-finals.
