Fencing At The 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre was one of four fencing events on the Fencing at the 1908 Summer Olympics programme. The top two places were won by Hungarian fencers, who also took the gold medal in the Fencing at the 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's team sabre, team sabre event. Jenő Fuchs took the gold medal and Béla Zulawszky the silver. Bronze went to Bohemian Vilém Goppold von Lobsdorf. There were 76 competitors from 11 nations. Each nation could enter up to 12 fencers.Official Report, p.34. Background This was the fourth appearance of the event, which is the only fencing event to have been held at every Summer Olympics. The 1900 gold medalist, Georges de la Falaise of France, returned after not competing in 1904. Belgium, Bohemia, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and South Africa each made their debut in the men's sabre. Lajos Werkner
Lajos Werkner (23 October 1883 – 12 November 1943) was a Hungarian Olympic champion sabre fencer. Early and personal life Werkner was born in Budapest, Hungary, and was Jewish. Werkner was educated as a mechanical engineer. Fencing career Wernker trained at the Nemzeti Vívó Club (NVC) in Budapest. Werkner won team gold medals at the 1908 Olympics in London at 24 years of age, and at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm at 28 years of age, placing sixth-seventh individually. He won the Hungarian Championship in sabre in 1912–14. After retiring from competitions in 1914, Werkner remained active as a sports official.Olimpiai érmeseink – Werkner Lajos

Douglas William Godfree (16 October 1881 – 5 August 1929) was a British Army officer who competed in fencing and modern pentathlon at the Olympic Games as well as playing a number of other sports. Louis Renaud (fencer)
Louis Renaud (October 3, 1818 – November 13, 1878) was a Quebec businessman and political figure. He was a Conservative Party of Canada member of the Senate of Canada representing De Salaberry division from 1867 to 1873. He was born in Lachine, Lower Canada in 1818 and studied at the Collège de Nicolet. His father became ill and Louis and his brother Jean-Baptiste had to begin work at a young age. He later went into business with his brother and then, around 1856, with John Young. Renaud was heavily involved in the grain and flour trade. In 1856, he was elected to the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada for Salaberry division and he was reelected in 1864 by acclamation. After Confederation, he was named to the Senate and served until he was forced to resign because of ill health in 1873. His son-in-law, François-Xavier-Anselme Trudel, was named to the same seat in the Senate. He died in Sainte-Martine in 1878 and was buried in the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemeter ...

Archibald Murray (fencer)
General Sir Archibald James Murray, (23 April 1860 – 21 January 1945) was a British Army officer who served in the Second Boer War and the First World War. He was chief of staff to the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in August 1914 but appears to have suffered a physical breakdown in the retreat from Mons, and was required to step down from that position in January 1915. After serving as Deputy Chief of the Imperial General Staff for much of 1915, he was briefly Chief of the Imperial General Staff from September to December 1915. He was subsequently Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from January 1916 to June 1917, in which role he laid the military foundation for the defeat and destruction of the Ottoman Empire in the Arabian Peninsula and the Levant.
