Fencing At The 2024 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre event at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place on 27 July 2024 at the Grand Palais strip. Background This was the 30th appearance of the event, which was the only fencing event to have been held at every Summer Olympics. The defending champion Áron Szilágyi lost in the round of 32. Qualification Competition format The 1996 tournament had vastly simplified the competition format into a single-elimination bracket, with a bronze medal match. Fencing was done to 15 touches. Standard sabre rules regarding target area, striking, and priority were used. Schedule The competition was held over a single day, Saturday, 27 July. The Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées ( en, Great Palace of the Elysian Fields), commonly known as the Grand Palais (English: Great Palace), is a historic site, exhibition hall and museum complex located at the Champs-Élysées in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, France. Evann Jean Abba Girault (born 25 August 2004) is a French- Nigerien sabre fencer. He qualified to represent Niger at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Biography Girault was born on 25 August 2004 in Orléans, France, to a French father and Nigerien mother. He holds dual citizenship. He grew up in Orléans and competed in gymnastics as a youth for seven or eight years. His brother was a fencer, and after watching him participate at various events, he decided to try out the sport himself. He joined the fencing club in 2015. Girault competes in sabre fencing events and is right-handed. In addition to competing at tournaments in France, he started competing internationally in 2021, choosing to represent Niger. Eli Dershwitz
Eli Dershwitz (born September 23, 1995) is an American left-handed sabre fencer, four-time individual Pan American champion, and two-time Olympian. In 2014, Dershwitz won the US Men's Saber National Championship, becoming the youngest US senior men's saber championship holder. Dershwitz then won the 2015 Junior World Fencing Championships in saber, becoming the inaugural U.S. men's saber fencer to win a world title. He is a four-time Pan-American Championship title holder, and the 2015 Pan American Games champion in saber. Dershwitz competed in fencing at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He returned to Harvard University as a sophomore, winning individual saber in the 2017 NCAA Fencing Championship and as a junior in the 2018 NCAA Fencing Championship. Gu Bon-gil ( or ; born 27 April 1989) is a South Korean right-handed sabre fencer. Gu is an eight-time team Asian champion, seven-time individual Asian champion, and three-time team world champion. A three-time Olympian, Gu is a two-time team Olympic champion. Early life A native of Daegu, Gu had played football all through elementary and middle school and went on to Osung High School, which was the alma mater of his 2012 Olympics teammate Oh Eun-seok.
