Fencing At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 24 July 2021 at the Makuhari Messe. Thirty-six fencers from 18 nations competed. Hungary's Áron Szilágyi completed a three-peat by winning the gold medal. Background This was the 29th appearance of the event, which is the only fencing event to have been held at every Summer Olympics. The two-time reigning Olympic champion was Áron Szilágyi of Hungary. The reigning World Champion was Oh Sang-uk of South Korea. Makuhari Messe
is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba City, in the northwest corner of Chiba Prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. ''Makuhari'' is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair". Mojtaba Abedini Shourmasti ( fa, مجتبی عابدینی شورمستی; born 11 August 1984) is an Iranian 3-time Olympian sabre fencer. In 2012, he became the first Iranian fencer to compete in the Olympics. András Szatmári
András Szatmári (born 3 February 1993) is a Hungarian right-handed sabre fencer, 2018 team European champion, 2017 individual world champion, and 2021 team Olympic bronze medalist. Career Szatmári took up fencing to follow the steps of his father, who fenced at Vasas SC. His first coach was György Gerevich, son of seven-time Olympic fencer Aladár Gerevich, who also trained Áron Szilágyi and Csanád Gémesi. Szatmári was Junior European Champion and U23 European Championship in 2012 and won the silver medal in the 2013 Junior World Championships in Poreč. He reached the quarter-finals in the 2013 World Championships in home city Budapest, where he was defeated by Russia's Nikolay Kovalev, who eventually took the silver medal.
